London to walk the wards in the summer. Contrary to Turner's interpretation, it was, I would suggest, a feature of little importance in the early days. These examples are all evidences from a different historiographic tradition to which Turner, writing in the 1930s, could not address himself; a not altogether unfortunate thing perhaps, for otherwise the great might never have appeared in his ti...

We provide an axiomatic justification to aggregate money metrics. The key axiom requires the approval of richer-to-poorer transfers that preserve the overall efficiency of the distribution. This transfer principle, together with the basic axioms anonymity, continuity, monotonicity, and a version of welfarism, characterizes a standard social welfare function defined over money metric utilities.

This study explores the equilibrium outcomes in the contexts of quantity-setting and price-setting mixed duopolies with consistent conjectures of both the social welfare maximizing public firm and the relative profit maximizing private firm. Similar to the private duopoly composed of only relative profit maximizing firms, we show that in the mixed duopoly, the equilibrium outcomes in the quanti...

To maximize social welfare, airports should be allowed to take losses or make pro®ts at di€erent times while achieving break-even only in the long run. In particular, with economies growing over time, socially optimal pricing for a new airport can involve de®cit in its early years and surplus in its...

This research examines the hypothesis that religiosity has two competing psychological influences on the social welfare attitudes of contemporary Americans. On the one hand, religiosity promotes a culturally based conservative identity, which in turn promotes opposition to federal social welfare provision. On the other hand, religiosity promotes a prosocial value orientation, which in turn prom...
