We discuss the observational consequences of black hole spin in X-ray binaries within the framework of the standard thin accretion disk model. When compared to theoretical flux distribution from the surface of a thin disk surrounding a Kerr black hole, the observed X-ray properties of the Galactic superluminal jet sources, GRO J1655-40 and GRS 1915+105, strongly suggest that each contains a bla...
Most current superresolution (SR) microscope techniques surpass the diffraction limit at the expense of temporal resolution, compromising their applications to live-cell imaging. Here we describe a new SR fluorescence microscope based on confocal microscope optics, which we name the spinning disk superresolution microscope (SDSRM). Theoretically, the SDSRM is equivalent to a structured illumina...
We describe three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a geometrically thin accretion disk around a non-spinning black hole. The disk has a thickness h/r ∼ 0.05−0.1 over the radius range (2−20)GM/c2. In steady state, the specific angular momentum profile of the inflowing magnetized gas deviates by less than 2% from that of the standard thin disk model of Novikov &...
A low-cost and efficient photocatalytic reactor for environmental treatment and green technology was presented. ZnO nanorods firmly growing on polycarbonate optical disk substrate are generally perpendicular to the substrate as the immobilized photocatalyst of the spinning disk reactor. The photocatalytic efficiency and durability of the ZnO nanorods are effectively demonstrated.
High performance storage systems like file systems, databases and persistent key value stores have very high storage I/O requirements. To maximize the efficiency of disk I/O, these systems usually make certain assumptions about the performance characteristics of the underlying storage medium, and design their disk read/write patterns accordingly. Some of the common assumptions include: sequenti...
A modified close cycle helium gas cryogenic system was used to measure the flux drag torque acting on a free spinning disk magnet by a single grain YBCO superconductor. It was found that at low spinning speed ( less than 8 Hz ) and constant levitation height, the flux drag torque decreased with temperature which behavior is roughly similar to the temperature dependence of the reciprocal of crit...
An inexpensive plastic disk disposable was designed for digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) applications with a microfluidic architecture that passively compartmentalizes a sample into 1000 nanoliter-sized wells by centrifugation. Well volumes of 33 nL were attained with a 16% volume coefficient of variation (CV). A rapid air thermocycler with aggregate real-time fluorescence detection was ...
Exponential data growth is a reality for most enterprise and scientific data centers. Improvements in price/performance and storage densities of disks have made it both easy and affordable to maintain most of the data in large disk storage farms. The provisioning of disk storage farms however, is at the expense of high energy consumption due to the large number of spinning disks. The power for ...
In this study we investigated the possibility of increasing the visibility of helicopter rotor tips when viewed from the underside. In an experimental study we used a model of a rotor blade spinning at a fast enough rate that it appeared as a transparent disk. The tips of the blades were painted fluorescent red-orange, and were observed under three different lighting conditions. In one conditio...
