OBJECTIVES This study was designed to demonstrate the characteristics of qacA/B-positive Staphylococcus aureus in China. METHODS One hundred and forty-five MRSA and 178 MSSA from clinical specimens from seven hospitals in different regions of China, 70 MRSA from superficial sites of patients and 106 MRSA from environmental samples from an ICU were collected and screened for the presence of th...

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) ST398 isolated from pigs raised in conventional farms was previously reported. Here we report a study on 25 farms adhering to an alternative system. LA-MRSA ST398 was not detected in nasal swabs from 178 pigs or from 89 humans working and living on these farms.

The draft genome sequence of a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolate (sequence type 1 [ST 1]) from the salted dried ribbonfish from Gujarat, India, is reported here. Staphylococcus genus-specific genes were present in this MRSA isolate. The whole-genome sequence of this strain contains 2,797 protein-coding genes and 80 RNAs within the 2.85-Mb genome.

A duplex LightCycler PCR assay targeting the mecA gene and a Staphylococcus aureus-specific marker was used to test 165 S. aureus strains and 80 strains of other bacterial species. Within an assay time of 60 min plus 10 min for sample preparation, S. aureus as well as the presence or absence of the mecA gene was correctly identified.

BACKGROUND Intracranial abscesses are associated with high mortality. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main pathogens that cause intracranial infection. Until now, there is no report to identify the key effectors of S. aureus during the intracranial infection. METHODS The murine intracranial abscesses model induced by S. aureus was constructed. The vital sign and survival rate of mice were...

Recently, we demonstrated rapid dissemination of different methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clones at the Institute for Microbiology at the University of Magdeburg (B. Ghebremedhin, W. König, and B. König, Eur. J. Clin. Microbiol. Infect. Dis. 24:388-398, 2005). The majority of them harbored the readily transmissible mec cassette type IV. Thus, theoretically, methicillin-susce...

Staphylococci are facultative anaerobes, perfectly spherical un-encapsulated cocci, with a diameter not exceeding 1 micrometer in diameter. Staphylococcus aureus are generally harmless and remain confined to the skin unless they burrow deep into the body, causing life-threatening infections in bones, joints, bloodstream, heart valves and lungs. Among the 20 medically important staphylococci spe...

Epiglottitis has been mainly associated with childhood infection with Haemophilis influenzae type B but cases of adult epiglottitis are increasing. We report here a case of adult epiglottitis and present evidence that it was caused by Staphylococcus aureus. A 48-year old patient with clinical symptoms of epiglottitis grew Staphylococcus aureus in pure culture from an epiglottal swab. Staphyloco...

Background and Objective: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen in medicine. Different studies have shown that some plant-derived materials loaded in a drug delivery system such as nanoliposomes could inhibit growth of resistant bacteria. Silymarin is an effective compound from medicinal plant Silybum mariunum L. The aim of this study was to prepare silymarin-load...

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium that can provide invasive conditions by secreting various toxins. It is involved in the development of skin infections, such as swollen and ulcers. Today, one of the main problems is the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus resistant strains. The aim of the current study was to detect virulence factors and antibiotic re...
