Over the last three decades there has been significant progress in the first principles methods for calculating the properties of materials at the quantum level. They have largely been based on the local density approximation (LDA) to density functional theory (DFT). However, nanoscience places new demands on these first principles methods because of the thousands to millions of atoms present i...
JUNE 2009 | VOLUME 12 | NUMBER 6 28 The selfand directed assembly of materials has been of considerable interest for a number of years, however only recently has it become possible to program structure and properties on the nanoscale with the precision required for a number of important applications. It is now possible to define, with nanometer accuracy, the complete 3D structure of functional ...
This paper provides an overview of specifications and standards for metadata relating to learning materials. It is structured to present first the currently established metadata schemas in use today (specifically the IEEE LOM and Dublin Core metadata), then to examine current developments and activities before looking at what might be the future challenges. The examination of current developmen...
Material forces govern the behaviour and the evolution of a defect or of an inhomogeneity in a solid material. In elastic materials these forces are associated with the Eshelby tensor, as is known. In structured or micro-structured materials, an Eshelby–like stress can be assembled by following a simple rule. By appealing to this rule, one is able to propose an expression for the Eshelby tensor...
All types of manuscripts should contain an abstract. An abstract of 250 words maximum should be provided on a separate page in the Manuscript file (abstract only, without authors and affiliation). The abstract of an original article should be structured into four headings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusions. For other article types, abstracts do not have to be structu...
Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNs) with rather high specific surface area (SSA) are important two-dimensional layer-structured materials. Here, a solvent-mediated synthesis of h-BNNs revealed a template-free lattice plane control strategy that induced high SSA nanoporous structured h-BNNs with outstanding aerobic oxidative desulfurization performance.
