The presence of edema on MR imaging is a common finding in acute or subacute vertebral body compression fractures. Compression fractures can present in patients with benign osteoporosis, metastases, multiple myeloma, or hemangiomas. We present 2 patients with multiple myeloma who had symptomatic acute and subacute compression fractures documented on imaging studies without associated edema on M...
A 44 year old female presented with a subacute myelopathy in association with pelvic venous thrombosis. It is inferred from the temporal relationship of these events that the patient suffered a subacute spinal venous infarction. This is discussed along with the aetiology, anatomical distribution and management of the condition.

Subacute granulomatous thyroiditis is an uncommon disease that occurs most often in women in their second to fifth decades of life. This disease usually presents with thyroid tenderness, a low grade fever, and occasional dysphagia. The disease resolves spontaneously, usually without thyroid function abnormalities. We herein present the CT and MR imaging findings of two cases of subacute granulo...
Methamphetamine (METH) is a psychostimulant drug of abuse that produces long-term behavioral changes including behavioral sensitization, tolerance, and dependence. METH has been reported to induce neurotoxic effects in several areas of the brain via the dopaminergic system. Changes of dopamine function can induce malfunction of the glutamatergic system. Therefore, the aim of the present study w...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The clinical usefulness and the time course of diffusion-weighted imaging and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in acute and subacute cerebral infarction have not yet been established, although it is known that contrast-enhanced T1-weighted spin-echo imaging can detect a subacute infarct. Our aim was to study which imaging technique is useful in detecting recent infarc...
BACKGROUND Blister formation and tissue damage in bullous pemphigoid have been attributed to the release of eosinophil granule proteins--namely, to eosinophil derived cationic protein (ECP) and major basic protein (MBP). In the present investigation these eosinophil granule proteins were studied in the conjunctiva of patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP). METHODS Conjunctival biop...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In vivo changes in tissue pH and energy metabolism are key to understanding stroke pathophysiology. Our goal was to study pH changes in subacute ischemic stroke and their relation to energy metabolism, which, unlike acidosis in acute stroke, are not yet well understood. METHODS We measured tissue pH and phospholipid as well as cell energy markers, including creatine, ph...
PURPOSE To investigate the clinical feasibility of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to detect recent myocardial infarction (MI) and to differentiate it from subacute and chronic MI, with late-gadolinium enhancement (LGE) sequence as reference. Furthermore, to measure variation of the myocardial apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) according to the age of MI. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-four...
Erythrocyte transketolase activity and the effect of adding thiamine pyrophosphate (% thiamine pyrophosphate effect) were measured in 111 subjects suspected to suffer from Leigh's disease (subacute necrotising encephalomyelopathy). From clinical evidence these subjects were divided into five groups: (1) necropsy-proved cases of subacute necrotising encephalomyelopathy, (2) cases positive for ur...
