A highly enantioselective method for desymmetrization of meso-epoxides using thiols is reported. This is the first example of epoxide activation achieved using metal BINOL phosphates. The reaction has a broad scope in terms of epoxide substrates and aromatic thiol nucleophiles. The resulting β-hydroxyl sulfides are obtained in excellent yield and enantioselectivity.

Various aryl sulfides can be synthesized by nickel-catalyzed alkyl- or arylthiolation of aryl iodide with a disulfide compound. This reaction produces Ni(0) from NiBr2-bpy by the reduction with zinc, and this generated complex works as an activating species to convert ArI into ArSR under neutral conditions. A nickel-catalyzed and benzoic acid-promoted direct sulfenylation of unactivated arenes using removable 2-(pyridine-2-yl)-isopropylamine as a directing group is described.
