A crystal structure of lysozyme in complex with p-sulfonato-calix[4]arene (sclx4) reveals a linear assembly of protein tetramers glued together by protein-calixarene interactions. One interaction involves encapsulation of the highly exposed C-terminal Arg128. The other involves an intricate protein-bound complex of sclx4, Mg(2+) and a fragment of polyethylene glycol.

A new working principle for detecting inorganic cation binding by water-soluble calix[4]arenes involves the displacement of a fluorescent azoalkane as guest. Fluorescence regeneration is observed for various metal ions, and binding of monovalent cations (alkali and ammonium) to p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene is detected and quantified for the first time.

The mixed system between p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide forms unilamellar vesicles after sonication of the aqueous dispersion. Furthermore these vesicles can be stored, without use of lyoprotectants, by lyophilization and then rehydration without change in size or shape.
