Enantiomerically pure tertiary thiols provide a major synthetic challenge, and despite the importance of chiral sulfur-containing compounds in biological and medicinal chemistry, surprisingly few effective methods are suitable for the asymmetric synthesis of tertiary thiols. This review details the most practical of the methods available.

The title compound, C(15)H(21)NO(2)S, synthesized by N-alkyl-ation of cyclo-hexyl-amine benzene-sulfonamide with allyl iodide, is of inter-est as a precursor to biologically active sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds. The cyclo-hexane ring is in a chair form and its mean plane makes a dihedral angle of 53.84 (12)° with the phenyl ring.

The alphaproteobacterium "Candidatus Pelagibacter ubique" strain HTCC1062 and most other members of the SAR11 clade lack genes for assimilatory sulfate reduction, making them dependent on organosulfur compounds that occur naturally in seawater. To investigate how these cells adapt to sulfur limitation, batch cultures were grown in defined medium containing either limiting or nonlimiting amounts...

The sulfur nutrition of microorganisms has been studied by many investigators. Early workers were interested essentially in sulfur compounds used by organisms as sulfur sources. Recent efforts have been directed toward the determination of mechanisms involved in the utilization of sulfur compounds. Results of investigations by Horowitz (1947), Lampen et al. (1947), Teas et al. (1948), Binkley a...

context of our studies aimed at the preparation of new sulfur containing compounds with unusual structures, i.e., strong intra and intermolecular S S non-bonded interactions (cf. [13]), we tried to synthesize tetrathiaacepentalene derivatives such as 6 starting from diethyl dihydroxythieno[2,3-b]-thiophenedicarboxylate (8) [14]. The bond ing situation of 6 would be related to that of the tetra...

The oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds was studied by using resting cells of the moderate thermophile Thiobacillus caldus strain KU. The oxygen consumption rate and total oxygen consumed were determined for the reduced sulfur compounds thiosulfate, tetrathionate, sulfur, sulfide, and sulfite in the absence and in the presence of inhibitors and uncouplers. The uncouplers 2,4-dinitro...

For many years reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS) have been recognized as key messengers in the process of thiol-based redox regulation. Relatively recently, literature reports began to mention reactive sulfur species (RSS) and their role in thiol regulation. This review is focused on biogenesis and biological properties of RSS, including: hydropersulfides, polysulfides and hydr...

Although isothiocyanate and indole compounds derived from cruciferous vegetables appear to be structurally unrelated, they are both derived from glucosinolates. These sulfur-containing glycosides are found in the order Capparales, which includes the large family Brassicaceae. The glucosinolate molecule comprises a common glucone moiety and a variable aglucone side-chain, derived from one of sev...

The importance of volatile organic compounds for functioning of microbes is receiving increased research attention. However, to date very little is known on how inter-specific bacterial interactions effect volatiles production as most studies have been focused on volatiles produced by monocultures of well-described bacterial genera. In this study we aimed to understand how inter-specific bacter...

Sulfur is an essential macro-element in plant and animal nutrition. Plants assimilate inorganic sulfate into two sulfur-containing amino acids, cysteine and methionine. Low supply of sulfate leads to decreased sulfur pools within plant tissues. As sulfur-related metabolites represent an integral part of plant metabolism with multiple interactions, sulfur deficiency stress induces a number of ad...
