in this paper, the modified euler-bernoulli beam model is presented to examine the influence of surface elasticity and residual surface tension on the critical force of axial buckling of nanotubes in the presence of rotary inertia. an explicit solution is derived for the buckling loads of microscaled euler beams considering surface effects. the size-dependent buckling behavior of the nanotube d...

a pseudomonas aeruginosa mutant derived by random mutagenesis with n-methyl-n¢-nitro-n-nitrosoguanidine, producing high levels of the rhamnolipid biosurfactants was selected on siegmund-wagner (sw) plates. the mutant designated p. aeruginosa ptcc1637 produces rhamnolipids at concentrations 10 time more than parent strain. nmr analysis and surface tension measurement showed that the biosurfactan...

Young's classic analysis of the equilibrium of a three-phase contact line ignores the out-of-plane component of the liquid-vapor surface tension. While it is expected that this unresolved force is balanced by the elastic response of the solid, a definitive analysis has remained elusive because of an apparent divergence of stress at the contact line. While a number of theories have been presente...

When a nonvolatile liquid film dewets from a partly compatible liquid substrate, the advancing dewetting front leaves behind droplets formed through a Rayleigh instability mechanism at its rim. We have found that these droplets continue to move in the direction of the dewetting front for extended periods (of order one day) with an initial droplet velocity varying linearly with the droplet size,...

We simulate the evolution of the steady-state interface in the selective withdrawal regime. Selective withdrawal ends when the upward pull exerted by the viscous flow in the withdrawing liquid layer overcomes the downward force due to surface tension. The lower-layer dynamics are unimportant. The dominant contribution to the surface-tension force comes from the large area where the interface is...

We investigate the effects of inhomogeneous scalar field configurations on the electroweak phase transition. For this purpose we calculate the leading perturbative correction to the wave function correction term Z(φ, T ), i.e., the kinetic term in the effective action, for the electroweak Standard Model at finite temperature and the top quark self–mass. Our finding for the fermionic contributio...

We construct a phase-field model for collective cell migration based on a Ginzburg-Landau free-energy formulation. We model adhesion, surface tension, repulsion, coattraction, and polarization, enabling us to follow the cells' morphologies and the effect of their membranes fluctuations on collective motion. We were able to measure the tissue surface tension as a function of the individual cell ...

We investigate C1 regularity of minimizers to ́ F (∇u)dx in two dimensions for certain classes of non-smooth convex functionals F . In particular our results apply to the surface tensions that appear in recent works on random surfaces and random tilings of Kenyon, Okounkov and others.

We develop a theory of axisymmetric surfaces minimizing a combination of surface tension and nematic elastic energies which may be suitable for describing simple film and bubble shapes. As a function of the elastic constant and the applied tension on the bubbles, we find the analogues of the unduloid, sphere, and nodoid in addition to other new surfaces.

We use analytical considerations and computer simulations to show that the membrane spectrum of thermal fluctuations is governed by the mechanical and not the intrinsic tension. Our study highlights the fact that the commonly used quadratic approximation of the Helfrich effective Hamiltonian is not rotationally invariant. We demonstrate that this nonphysical feature leads to a calculated mechan...
