introduction induction of general anesthesia in patients with superior vena cava (svc) syndrome may cause airway obstruction and cardiovascular collapse. case presentation herein, we introduced a patient with the diagnosis of dissecting aneurysm of the ascending aorta who was candidate for emergency surgery. he also had symptoms of svc syndrome. to maintain airway patency during anesthetic mana...

BACKGROUND Proximal or 'downhill' esophageal varices are a rare cause of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Unlike the much more common distal esophageal varices, which are most commonly a result of portal hypertension, downhill esophageal varices result from vascular obstruction of the superior vena cava (SVC). While SVC obstruction is most commonly secondary to malignant causes, our review of...

The perioperative management of patients suffering from extensive superior vena cava (SVC) thrombus complicated by SVC syndrome presents unique challenges. The anesthesiologist needs to be prepared for possible thrombus dislodgement resulting in pulmonary embolism and also has to assess the need for fluid resuscitation given the dangers of massive intravenous fluid application via the upper ext...

S uperior vena cava (SVC) obstruction is commonly seen in patients with intrathoracic malignancies. Most cases are due to extrinsic compression by tumour masses. We present the case history of a man with SVC obstruction due instead to an intraluminal tumour which turned out to be adenocarcinoma of an unknown primary. A 54 year old chronic smoker presented with a 2 week history of progressive fa...

SVC (Scalable Video Coding) is designed to adapt to heterogeneous networks and various terminal devices. This paper presents an encryption scheme for SVC bitstreams which retains the valuable scalability properties of SVC. To this end, we explore PACSI (Payload Content Scalability Information) and RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) payload format such that encrypted bitstreams are SVC format-co...

The Static Var Compensator (SVC) and the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), as two components of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, play an important role in controlling the reactive power flow to the power network. Because of economic considerations, identifying the best location for installing the SVC and STATCOM is also important. The FACTS devices placement problem is c...

commonly due to thrombosis, represents a common and serious complication of long-term central venous catheterization. Thickening of the vascular intima or thrombosis involving the superior vena cava (SVC), if severe enough, can present clinically as the SVC syndrome. Typically, the symptoms of SVC syndrome, including headaches, brawny edema of the upper extremities, head and neck, and prominent...

The coordinated control for SVC and generic/multi-band PSS for power swing damping is presented for the multimachine power system. The background and the mathematical models of the generic PSS, the multi-band PSS and the SVC are presented. The V-I characteristics as well as the dynamic properties of the static var compensator (SVC) are presented. The multi-machine power system is simulated usin...

This paper will discuss and demonstrate how Static Var Compensator (SVC) component and how will be these components successfully applied to control reactive power in the transmission line for system disturbance and effectively regulate system voltage. SVC is basically a shunt connected static var generator whose output is adjusted to exchange capacitive or inductive current so as to maintain or...

Transvenous pacemaker implantation tends to be difficult in the setting of a persistent left superior vena cava (SVC) and an absent or inaccessible right SVC. We report two small children in whom transvenous pacing leads were successfully inserted via a persistent left SVC. This technique was safe in our cases; however, favorable long-term result has yet to be demonstrated.
