This symposium was held in Trento, Italy, from June 14 to 16, 2007, and was cochaired by William G. Kaelin, Enrico Mihich, and Charles L. Sawyers. A session was deveted to the proof of concept derived from successes in target-oriented therapeutics. Molecular targets must be identified in each patients because they are equally present in all patients with the same tumor type. A session was devot...

A new strategy to obtain fluorescent cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) probes is proposed. The key intermediate, a triiodo CTV, is prepared in 3 steps with 47% overall yield. The whole synthesis requires only one purification step. The potential of this triiodo CTV as an intermediate is illustrated through the synthesis of a fluorescent phosphorylated probe that is able to bind choline and acetylcholin...

Popular methods for estimating the central subspace in regression require slicing a continuous response. However, slicing can result in loss of information and in some cases that loss can be substantial. We use intraslice covariances to construct improved inference methods for the central subspace. These methods are optimal within a class of quadratic inference functions and permit chi-squared ...

An ATR algorithm for low quality imagery is reported. Compact shaped targets are represented by their 2D silhouettes. Associated with each point on the silhouette, there is a direction roughly perpendicular to the local segment of the silhouette. The location of each silhouette point is assumed to be perturbed along that direction. A statistical technique is used to estimate the variance of tha...

Background modeling is the key technology for moving target detection implemented with the background difference method. The conventional background modeling methods cost large amount of calculation time, in order to improve the speed and precision of the model, this paper presents an improved Frame Difference Background Modeling. The frame difference background modeling was initialized by Sele...

Energy-efficient dynamic branch predictors are proposed for the Cell SPE, which normally depends on compiler-inserted hint instructions to predict branches. All designed schemes use a Branch Target Buffer (BTB) to store the branch target address and the prediction, which is computed using a bimodal counter. One prediction scheme predecodes instructions when they are fetched from the local store...

This paper presents two Bayesian alternatives to the chi-squared test for determining whether a pair of categorical data sets were generated from the same underlying distribution. It then discusses such alternatives for the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, which is often used when the data sets consist of real numbers.

Structure-activity relationship (SAR) is one of the foundational principles of biomolecular activity and states that similar molecules have similar biological activity. This work is focused on the utilization of enzymatic reactions in order to augment ligands with small apolar substituents. These modified molecules will then be employed for establishing the SAR of a ligand series. For this purp...

We present an application of a multi hypothesis tracking (MHT) algorithm to the case of ground moving targets detected by GMTI (Ground Moving Target Indicator) radar sensors. The algorithms for track extraction, prediction, filtering, and track maintenance are briefly described, and exemplary tracking results for simulated MTI data are demonstrated.
