We have profiled promoter DNA methylation alterations in 272 glioblastoma tumors in the context of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We found that a distinct subset of samples displays concerted hypermethylation at a large number of loci, indicating the existence of a glioma-CpG island methylator phenotype (G-CIMP). We validated G-CIMP in a set of non-TCGA glioblastomas and low-grade gliomas. G-C...

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have unraveled a large number of cancer risk alleles. Understanding how these allelic variants predispose to disease is a major bottleneck confronting translational application. In this issue, Li and colleagues combine GWASs with The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to disambiguate the contributions of germline and somatic variants to tumorigenic gene expressio...

The comprehensive multiplatform genomics data generated by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Research Network is an enabling resource for cancer research. It includes an unprecedented amount of microRNA sequence data: ~11 000 libraries across 33 cancer types. Combined with initiatives like the National Cancer Institute Genomics Cloud Pilots, such data resources will make intensive analysis of larg...

The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) has catalyzed systematic characterization of diverse genomic alterations underlying human cancers. At this historic junction marking the completion of genomic characterization of over 11,000 tumors from 33 cancer types, we present our current understanding of the molecular processes governing oncogenesis. We illustrate our insights into cancer through synthesis of...

The amount of bio-medical data available over the Web grows exponentially with time. The large volume of the currently available data makes it difficult to explore, while the velocity at which this data changes and the variety of formats in which bio-medical is published makes it difficult to access them in an integrated form. Moreover, the lack of an integrated vocabulary makes querying this d...

Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Late diagnosis is the main cause of the high rate of treatment failure and death among patients with gastric cancer; therefore identifying the molecular basis of cancer initiation and metastasis is so critical for developing efficient methods for early diagnosis and therapy. long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are the largest group of no...

The amount of bio-medical data available on the Web grows exponentially with time. The resulting large volume of data makes manual exploration very tedious. Moreover, the velocity at which this data changes and the variety of formats in which bio-medical data is published makes it difficult to access them in an integrated form.
