Many systems are hacked daily and apparently without much effort (e.g., see [1]). This happens because hackers prefer not to break security mechanisms immediately, but rather to target unguarded components first. Such components, e.g., users and human-computer ceremonies [2], are hacked by exploiting cognitive features (e.g., trust) and people’s dismay with ill-designed interfaces. These user-r...

Sentence syntax is the basis for organizing semantic relations in TANKA, a project that aims to acquire knowledge from technical text. Other hallmarks include an absence of precoded domain-specific knowledge; significant use of public-domain generic linguistic information sources; involvement of the user as a judge and source of expertise; and learning from the meaning representations produced ...

Recent initiatives that evaluate the security of physical systems with objects as assets and people as agents –here called Socio-Technical Physical Systems– have limitations: their agent behaviour is too simple, they just estimate feasibility and not the likelihood of attacks, or they do estimate likelihood but on explicitly provided attacks only. We propose a model that can detect and quantify...

We present a socio-technical analysis of security of Hotspot and Hotspot 2.0. The analysis focuses is user-centric, and aim at understanding which user action can compromise security in presence of a attacker. We identify research questions about possible factors that may affect user’s security decisions, and propose experiments to answer them.

Notwithstanding its widespread use in financial markets and well-documented profitability, technical analysis is still perceived to carry useless information. This paper provides a possible explanation for this puzzle that goes beyond the standard self-fulfilling prophecy argument. If at least some of the asset price fundamentals are not currently observable, the oscillator model is able to inf...

Neurons often work together to compute and process information, and neural assemblies arise from synaptic interactions and neural circuits. One way to study neural assemblies is to simultaneously record from several or many neurons and study the statistical relations among their spike trains. From this analysis researchers can try to understand the nature of the assemblies, which can also lead ...

Few methods address analysis of socio-technical system requirements. This paper describes a method for analysing dependencies between users/stakeholders agents and computer systems in the operational environment. Domain scenarios describing the system and its context are used to create an environment model. A method is proposed to define business organisational relationships by operationalising...

We present a syntactic approach to technical drawing dimensions analysis. A speciic grammar is used to describe dimensions of drawings. This grammar can be graphically designed by combining diierent graphic primitives. The algorithm used for analysis can start at diierent points of the grammar. The analysis proceeds bottom-up and top-down according to previously obtained results.
