Fibrocartilaginous tissues such as the meniscus serve critical load-bearing roles, relying on arrays of collagen fibers to resist tensile loads experienced with normal activity. As these structures are frequently injured and possess limited healing capacity, there exists great demand for tissue-engineered replacements. Toward recreating the structural features of these anisotropic tissues in vi...

An in situ quantitative tensile testing platform is developed to enable the uniform in-plane loading of a freestanding membrane of 2D materials inside a scanning electron microscope. The in situ tensile testing reveals the brittle fracture of large-area MoSe2 crystals and measures their fracture strength for the first time.

The ma~tensitic transfol-niation (MT) under tensile dcfol.m:ltion at 77K i n a series of FeNi-Mn alloys was studied. The anlotult of ~na~tensite fos~ned d ~ ~ r i ~ l g the tensile test depends on the applied stress and on the Mn content which determines the mnrtensitic point and the MT start stress. Elongation of the tensile tested samples has a maximum value in the alloys co~ltainilig the 50%...

The present study deals with the experimental analysis and mechanical modeling of tensile behavior of brain soft tissue. A transversely isotropic hyperelastic model recently proposed by Meaney (2003) is adopted and mathematically studied under uniaxial loading conditions. Material parameter estimates are obtained through tensile tests on porcine brain materials accounting for regional and direc...

The fracture strengths and elastic moduli of arc-grown multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were measured by tensile loading inside of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Eighteen tensile tests were performed on 14 MWCNTs with three of them being tested multiple times (3 , 2 , and 2 , respectively). All the MWCNTs fractured in the Bsword-insheath’’ mode. The diameters of the MWCNTs were mea...

We aimed to investigate the elastic modulus of trabeculae using tensile tests and assess the effects of nanostructure at the hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystal scale on the elastic modulus. In the experiments, 18 trabeculae that were at least 3mm in length in the proximal epiphysis of three adult bovine femurs were used. Tensile tests were conducted using a small tensile testing device coupled with m...

A non-destructive evaluation method for predicting the residual tensile strength of erosion damaged fiber-reinforced composites was developed based on monitoring the acoustic emission (AE) activity of the composite specimens during uniaxial tensile loading. The developed method was used for estimating the residual strength of E-glass/epoxy composite with ply sequence of [45 / 45 /0 /45 / 45 /0 ...

Tensile tests have been performed at up to five different displacement rates, from about lmm/s to over 20,000mm/s, on braided glass-fibre tubes of both square and circular cross-section and the corresponding force-displacement curves have been derived. In general both the maximum tensile force and the displacement at failure increase with increasing loading rate, implying a greater energy absor...

We report elastic constant calculation and a "theoretical" tensile experiment on stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystal using an ab initio technique. These results compare favorably with a variety of measured data. Theoretical tensile experiments are performed on the orthorhombic cell of HAP for both uniaxial and biaxial loading. The results show considerable anisotropy in the stress-strai...
