The toughening of an aromatic amine-cured diglycidyl ether of bisphenoI-A epoxy with particles of crystalline polymers was studied. The crystalline polymers were poly(butylene terephthalate), nylon 6, and poly(vinylidene fluoride). Nylon 6 and poly(vinylidene fluoride) were found to toughen the epoxy about as well as did an equivalent amount of CTBN rubber. Poly(butylene terephthalate) was foun...

Bone is generally loaded under multiaxial conditions in vivo; as it invariably contains microcracks, this leads to complex mixed-mode stress-states involving combinations of tension, compression and shear. In previous work on the mixed-mode loading of human cortical bone (using an asymmetric bend test geometry), we found that the bone toughness was lower when loaded in far-field shear than in t...

Ceramic/metal interfaces were studied that fail by atomistic separation accompanied by plastic dissipation in the metal. The macroscopic toughness of the specific Ni alloy/Al2O3 interface considered is typically on the order of ten times the atomistic work of separation in mode I and even higher if combinations of mode I and mode II act on the interface. Inputs to the computational model of int...

EFFECTS OF RUBBER ADDITIVES ON PROPERTIES OF ASPHALTIC MATERIALS by JOHN ALBERT ALEXANDER Submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering on August 17, 1968, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering. This study investigated the modification of asphalt with various rubbers and the effect of this modification on the values of fracture to...

The effect of microstructural variations on the fracture toughness of Alloy 718 was reviewed. The metallurgical parameters surveyed in this paper included heat treatment, heat-to-heat variations, product-form variations, neutron irradiation and long-term thermal aging. Key microstructural features and operative fracture mechanisms were related to macroscopic fracture toughness properties.

The fracture toughness and resistance-curve behavior of relatively coarse-scale, niobium/niobium aluminide (Nb/Nb3Al) laminated composites have been examined and compared to other Nb/Nb3Al composites with (in situ) Nb particulate or microlaminate reinforcements. The addition of high aspectratio Nb reinforcements, in the form of 20 vol. pct of 50to 250-mm-thick layers, was seen to improve the to...

Recently, a new generation of titanium aluminide alloy named Gamma-Met PX (GKSS, Geesthacht, Germany) has been developed with better rolling and postrolling characteristics. Previous work on this alloy has shown the material to have higher strengths at room and elevated temperatures when compared with other gamma titanium aluminides. In particular, this new alloy has shown increased ductility a...

To gain insight into the large toughness variability observed between metallic glasses (MGs), we examine the origin of fracture toughness through bending experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for two binary MGs: Pd82Si18 and Cu46Zr54 The bending experiments show that Pd82Si18 is considerably tougher than Cu46Zr54, and the higher toughness of Pd82Si18 is attributed to an ability to...
