BACKGROUND Bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) can hinder surgical progress and may be associated with increased complications. Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic that is known to reduce operative bleeding. The current study was designed to assess the effect of adjunctive intravenous tranexamic acid on intraoperative bleeding and the quality of the surgical field during ESS. ME...
BACKGROUND Topical application of tranexamic acid to bleeding wound surfaces reduces blood loss in patients undergoing some major surgeries, without systemic complications. The objective of the present trial was to assess the efficacy and safety of the topical application of tranexamic acid on postoperative blood loss in patients undergoing primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty with cement...
OBJECTIVES There is still no consensus as to the best form and dosages of use of tranexamic acid. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of tranexamic acid in total hip arthroplasty, in order to reduce blood loss and decrease hemoglobin, taking into account different administration protocols. METHODS 42 patients submitted to total hip arthroplasty were divided into three groups. The st...
BACKGROUND Tranexamic acid prevents blood clots from breaking down and reduces bleeding. However, it is uncertain whether tranexamic acid is effective in traumatic brain injury. The CRASH-3 trial is a randomised controlled trial that will examine the effect of tranexamic acid (versus placebo) on death and disability in 13,000 patients with traumatic brain injury. The CRASH-3 trial hypothesizes ...
Comparison of the effects Tranexamic Acid and Remifentanil on Reduction Intraoperative Postoperative Hemorrhage during Dacriocystorhynostomy
Haemostatic balance shifts towards pro-coagulation during infection. Plasminogen, a key molecule of fibrinolysis, may play an important role in the pathogenesis of staphylococcal infections. In the present study, we assessed the impact of inhibition of plasminogen activation by tranexamic acid on the course of staphylococcal sepsis and septic arthritis in mice. We found significantly down-regul...
BACKGROUND Aprotinin and tranexamic acid are routinely used to reduce bleeding in cardiac surgery. There is a large difference in agent price and perhaps in efficacy. METHODS In a prospective, randomized, partially blinded study, 168 cardiac surgery patients at high risk for bleeding received either a full-dose aprotinin infusion, tranexamic acid (10-mg/kg load, 1-mg x kg(-1) x h(-1) infusion...
OBJECTIVE Scoliosis surgery involves major blood loss and frequently requires blood transfusion. The cost and risks involved in using allogeneic blood have motivated investigation of methods capable of reducing patients' bleeding during operations. One of these methods is to use antifibrinolytic drugs, and tranexamic acid is among these. The aim of this study was to assess the use of this drug ...
BACKGROUND Because of recent concerns about the safety of aprotinin, we updated our 2007 Cochrane review that compared the relative benefits and risks of aprotinin and the lysine analogues tranexamic acid and epsilon aminocaproic acid. METHODS We searched electronic databases, including CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Google and Google Scholar for trials of antifibrinolytic drugs used in adults sch...
In a double-blind trial tranexamic acid (AMCA, Cyclokapron), 1 g three times a day for five days, significantly reduced blood loss and transfusion requirements after dental extraction in patients with haemophilia and Christmas disease. No side effects were seen in either group of patients. Screening tests showed no toxic action of tranexamic acid on the liver, kidney, or heart.
