Background & Aim: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections that are usually treated empirically. Since antibiotic resistance may vary from region to region, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of uropathogenic bacteria isolated from urine samples received by the local hospital in Kalaleh (Hazrat Rasool hospital), no...

We report here the draft genome sequence of uropathogenic Escherichia coli sequence type 648 (ST648) possessing blaNDM-5 from a 55-year-old female in Australia with a history of travel to India. The plasmid-mediated blaNDM-5 was in a genetic context nearly identical to that of the GenBank entry of an IncX3 blaNDM-5 plasmid previously reported from India (Klebsiella pneumoniae MGR-K194).

Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) have long been the focus of interest for their beneficial effects in preventing urinary tract infections. Among cranberry compounds, a group of proanthocyanidins (PACs) with A-type linkages were isolated which exhibit bacterial anti-adhesion activity against uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains. These PAC inhibit P-fimbriae synthesis and induce a bacterial ...

[reaction: see text] Optically active beta-lactams 3 are obtained in excellent yields (up to 93%) and with complete stereoselectivity from Meldrum's acid derivatives 1 and Delta(2)-thiazolines 2. A selective reduction to aldehydes 5 (R = Ar or CH(2)Ar) was then accomplished by using DIBAL-H. This rigid framework, with stereochemistry different than that of penicillin, is designed to be a suitab...
