Densification in highly porous, isothermal firn occurs primarily by Newtonian sliding on grain boundaries, but the coordination number increases with density and restricts further sliding. At a relative density of about 0.6 the coordination number approaches 6 and sliding ceases to be a primary mechanism of densification; the resulting decrease in densification rate causes the critical point in...

The Earth is likely to have acquired most of its water during accretion. Internal heat of planetesimals by short-lived radioisotopes would have caused some water loss, but impacts into planetesimals were insufficiently energetic to produce further drying. Water is thought to be critical for the development of plate tectonics, because it lowers viscosities in the asthenosphere, enabling subducti...

We investigate the effect of a temperature-dependent viscosity on the onset of thermal convection in a horizontal layer of a binary fluid mixture that is heated from below. For an exponential temperature dependence of the viscosity, we find, in binary mixtures as a function of a positive separation ratio ψ and beyond a certain viscosity contrast, a discontinuous transition between two stationar...

In this paper we provide generalizations of Zubov’s equation to differential games without Isaacs’ condition. We show that both generalizations of Zubov’s equation (which we call min-max and max-min Zubov equation, respectively) possess unique viscosity solutions which characterize the respective controllability domains. As a consequence, we show that under the usual Isaacs condition the respec...

Electric-field-induced instabilities in thin bilayers composed of either purely viscous or purely elastic films resting on a solid substrate are studied. In contrast to the electric-field-induced instability in a single elastic film, the length scale of the instability for elastic bilayers can be tuned by changing the ratios of the shear moduli, thicknesses, and dielectric permittivities of the...

The study was carried out to evaluate deformable and aggregative erythrocyte properties in humans under normal and pathological states and in rats exposed to various stressors. A strong correlation between the erythrocyte rheological determinants, i.e. deformability index and aggregation rate, was found under pathological and stress-induced states. The physiological significance of this phenome...

Periclase (MgO) is the second most abundant mineral after bridgmanite in the Earth's lower mantle, and its melting behaviour under pressure is important to constrain rheological properties and melting behaviours of the lower mantle materials. Significant discrepancies exist between the melting temperatures of MgO determined by laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LHDAC) and those based on dynamic c...

In this paper we study the generalized mean curvature flow of sets in the sub-Riemannian geometry of Carnot groups. We extend to our context the level sets method and the weak (viscosity) solutions introduced in the Euclidean setting in [29] and [14]. We establish two special cases of the comparison principle, existence, uniqueness and basic geometric properties of the flow.

In this work we assess the most recent estimates of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) for Antarctica, including those from both forward and inverse methods. The assessment is based on a comparison of the estimated uplift rates with a set of elastic-corrected GPS vertical velocities. These have been observed from an extensive GPS network and computed using data over the period 2009-2014. We fin...

We propose a finite-difference-based lattice Boltzmann model for dense binary mixtures based on the Enskog theory. The model is applicable to a mixture composed of two dense fluids with different shear viscosities. The macroscopic hydrodynamic and diffusion equations are derived from the model through the Chapmann-Enskog procedure. The model is also validated numerically.
