The Schelling model is one of a small number of “agent based” population models, where individual members of the population (agents) interact directly with other agents and move in space and time. In this note we study one-dimensional Schelling population models as dynamical systems and find formulas and precise asymptotics for the number of limit states.

Abstract: This paper studies the joint limiting behavior of extreme eigenvalues and trace of large sample covariance matrix in a generalized spiked population model, where the asymptotic regime is such that the dimension and sample size grow proportionally. The form of the joint limiting distribution is applied to conduct Johnson-Graybill-type tests, a family of approaches testing for signals i...

Human is a crucial factor responsible for local and large scale environmental change and is a key factor in rural management. Accurate simulating and predicting population change and its spatial distribution is of great interests to environmental scientists as well as social scientists. In this paper, we introduced the development of a spatial-explicit agent-based population model for China bas...

The introduction and spread of invasive species is increasingly driven by the expansion of human-made transportation routes. We formulate a network model of biotic invasion incorporating logistic growth and dispersal along a network, and present analyses of the model. We introduce small world networks and use them to investigate the role of network properties and long-distance dispersal on spre...

We validate a model for the population dynamics, as they occur in a chemostat environment, of the green algae Raphidocelis subcapitata, a species that is often used as a primary food source in toxicity experiments for the fresh water crustacean Daphnia magna. We collected longitudinal data from 4 replicate population experiments with R. subcapitata. This data was fit to a logistic growth model ...

A key problem in the description of language structure is to explain its contradictory properties of specificity and generality, the contrasting poles of formulaic prescription and generative productivity. I argue that this is possible if we accept analogy and similarity as the basic mechanisms of structural definition. As a specific example I discuss how it would be possible to use analogy to ...

The network of Barabasi and Albert, a preferential growth model where a new node is linked to the old ones with a probability proportional to their connectivity, is applied to Brazilian election results. The application of the Sznajd rule, that only agreeing pairs of people can convince their neighbours, gives a vote distribution in good agreement with reality.

What effect does candidate race have on co-racial voter turnout? Recent studies suggest that the presence of a black candidate results in an increase in black turnout. We argue that much of these findings can be attributed to the different design choices of previous researchers, and absence of attention paid to strategic candidate behavior. In this study we examine mayoral elections in the stat...

While many models have investigated the role of competitive mate selection processes in human marriage, few have addressed the potential for assortative processes to explain the observed demographics, as well as simultaneously investigating divorce. To explore the possibility that assortative mate selection processes may explain patterns of both marriage and divorce, we developed an agent-based...
