Isolated frog sartorii were exposed for 30 minutes to HETP-an irreversible anti-cholinesterase, and were then soaked in Ringer's at 15 degrees C. for 16 hours. At the end of the period of soaking the mean resting potential of the muscle fibers was only 29 mv. The decrease in the resting potential of the HETP-treated muscles was accompanied by a loss of potassium and a gain in sodium by the musc...

Meiotic chromosomes in an oocyte are not only a maternal genome carrier but also provide a positional signal to induce cortical polarization and define asymmetric meiotic division of the oocyte, resulting in polar body extrusion and haploidization of the maternal genome. The meiotic chromosomes play dual function in determination of meiosis: 1) organizing a bipolar spindle formation and 2) indu...

in this paper, the flow around bluff bodies with different cross sections and determination of forces acts on them are investigated.this paper presents the results of a numerical study on the flow characteristics and heat transfer over two equal square cylinders in a tandem arrangement. spacing between the cylinders is 5 widths of the cylinder and the reynolds number ranges from 1 to 200, pr=0....

Tissue morphogenesis requires control over cell shape changes and rearrangements. In the Drosophila mesoderm, linked epithelial cells apically constrict, without cell extrusion or intercalation, to fold the epithelium into a tube that will then undergo epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Apical constriction drives tissue folding or cell extrusion in different contexts, but the mechanism...

Dynamics of vortex pairs with the same and opposite circulations are studied theoretically in nonlocal nonlinear media with different intervortex separations. We demonstrate that the nonlocal nonlinear response not only leads to a dramatic suppression of the elliptical instabilities but also helps in the formation of quasi-stable rotating and breathing bound states for vortex–vortex and vortex–...

Rankine vortex characteristics of a partially coherent optical vortex are explored using classical and physical optics. Unlike a perfectly coherent vortex mode, the circulation is not quantized. Excess circulation is predicted owing to the wave nature of composite vortex fields. Based on these findings, we propose a vortex stellar interferometer.

Vortex dynamics in coherent ensembles of exciton polaritons (condensates) is studied in the framework of the polarization-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Vortex lattices can be resonantly excited in the polariton field by the interference of three or more optical pumps. Vortex-antivortex pairs can also appear in polariton condensates due to scattering with disorder. The nonlinear vortex dy...

We discuss an experimental technique developed to visualize quantized vortices in helium II. We illuminate micron-sized solid particles of hydrogen suspended in the fluid, and mark quantized vortex cores within the volume observed by a camera. While, under some circumstances, the particles modify vortex dynamics by the action of viscous drag and by pinning vortex intersections, we do capture ba...

Vortices can develop in intakes of turbojet and turbo fan aero engines during high power operation in the vicinity of solid surfaces. These vortices can cause catastrophic damage to the engine. The factors determining the formation of the vortex include both geometric dimensions as well as flow parameters. It was shown that the threshold at which the vortex forms or disappears is also dependent...
