Background: Timely access to primary care is important, particularly among patients with acute conditions and seeking gateways specialty care. Due concerns that expanded Medicaid eligibility would compromise new beneficiaries, an experimental study was conducted test the ability obtain timely appointments. Although appointments for simulated significantly increased, wait times also inc...

The m-machine no-wait flowshop scheduling problem is addressed where setup times are treated as separate from processing times. The objective is to minimize total tardiness. Different dispatching rules have been investigated and three were found to be superior. Two heuristics, a simulated annealing (SA) and a genetic algorithm (GA), have been proposed by using the best performing dispatching ru...

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling a nite number of jobs with stochastic wait-dependent processing times. We review the literature on this topic and present some new results. In particular, for certain processing time functions, we nd the policy which stochastically minimizes the makespan of the system.

BACKGROUND Patients often wait to have urgent or emergency surgery. The number of operating rooms (ORs) needed to minimize waiting time while optimizing resources can be determined using queuing theory and computer simulation. We developed a computer program using Monte Carlo simulation to determine the number of ORs needed to minimize patient wait times while optimizing resources. METHODS We...

INTRODUCTION I sought to determine whether emergency department (ED) volume is associated with differing ED wait times. METHODS I conducted a retrospective analysis of the Emergency Department Reporting System database of the Ontario Ministry of Health. I abstracted ED length of stay for patient visits to 117 hospital EDs during the second quarter of 2008, representing 89% of ED visits in the...

The application of network centric operations principles to human supervisory control (HSC) domains means that humans are increasingly being asked to manage multiple simultaneous HSC processes. However, increases in the number of available information sources, volume of information and operational tempo, all which place higher cognitive demands on operators, could become constraints limiting th...

In this paper the real time operation of an automatic teller machine (ATM) is analyzed using aTimed Petri Net (TPN) model. In the modeling, the probability of arrivals, the speed andattentiveness of customers (clients) are taken to account. Different parameters are based onthe statistical data. The model is simulated for 24 hours. The diagrams of number ofsucceeded customers, failed references ...
