We analysed spatial density and distribution of short-wavelength-sensitive photoreceptors (S-cones) in developing and adult human retinae using antibody against short-wavelength-sensitive opsin. Statistical tests indicate that before 20 weeks of gestation (WG) the S-cone mosaic is not distinguishable from a random distribution, but by 20 WG is significantly different from a random distribution ...

Let G = SpecA be an affine R-monoid scheme. We prove that the category of dual functors (over the category of commutative R-algebras) of G-modules is equivalent to the category of dual functors of A∗-modules. We prove that G is invariant exact if and only if A∗ = R × B∗ as R-algebras and the first projection A∗ → R is the unit of A. If M is a dual functor of G-modules and wG := (1, 0) ∈ R×B ∗ =...

Two patients are presented with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) and lower respiratory tract infections with Staphyloccus aureus (SA). It is posulated that there is a relationship between the infection and the induction or relapse of the disease. We suggest that bronchoalveolar lavages should be performed in cases of suspected WG to identify SA-infections. The co-existence of WG and SA support the...

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is defined as a granulomatous inflammation of the upper and lower respiratory tract due to a systemic vasculitis. Facial nerve palsy may occur during the course of any granulomatous or vasculitis disease. But very few cases have been reported in which facial nerve palsy is the presenting feature of WG. We recently experienced an interesting case of WG presenting as...

Power quality test facilities developed at the University of Wollongong include a 10kVA waveform generator (WG) of which the detailed design and operation has been described previously. The WG is essentially a programmable IGBT voltage source inverter controlled by a micro-controller. The original intention of this generator was to test electrical equipment under the influence of harmonic disto...

Here we report the identification of Dfz3, a novel member of the Frizzled family of seven-pass transmembrane receptors. Like Dfz2, Dfz3 is a target gene of Wingless (Wg) signalling, but in contrast to Dfz2, it is activated rather than repressed by Wg signalling in imaginal discs. We show that Dfz3 is not required for viability but is necessary for optimal Wg signalling at the wing margin.

Salivary gland involvement is a rare presenting clinical feature of Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). Early recognition and identification of any unusual presentations of WG may enable the early commencement of appropriate treatment. We report a case in which the initial manifestation of the disease was parotid gland swelling, and discuss the management of the patient. WG should be considered in t...

The introduction of complementary foods during infancy marks an important step in the development infant gut microbiome. Infant cereals are popular weaning but consistent evidence on their effect intestinal microbiota, especially when differing nutritional quality, is lacking. Fecal samples from 4–7-month-old Spanish infants who consumed whole grain and sugar content as first were analyzed chan...

Background: The health benefits associated with moderate wine consumption, as with ethanol and phenolic compounds, include different mechanisms still little understandable. Aim: Evaluate glycemic and weight variations, and the deposit of triglycerides, cholesterol and liver glycogen with red wine consumption. Methods: 60 ApoE knockout mice were divided into three groups of 20: Wine Group (...

PURPOSE To examine the distribution of laminin (Ln) chains in basement membranes (BMs) of the human cornea, lens, and retina in fetal development. METHODS Ten fetal eyes (9-20 weeks of gestation [wg]) were serially sectioned and treated with specific antibodies against the Ln-alpha1, -alpha2, -alpha3, -alpha4, -alpha5, -beta1, -beta2, -beta3, and -gamma1 chains. RESULTS The BM of the cornea...
