During development, a small number of conserved signaling molecules regulate regional specification, in which uniform populations of cells acquire differences and ultimately give rise to distinct organs. In the Drosophila eye imaginal disc, Wingless (Wg) signaling defines the region that gives rise to head tissue. JAK/STAT signaling was thought to regulate growth of the eye disc but not pattern...

Patterning and proliferation are coordinately controlled in the development of Drosophila imaginal discs. Localized expression of decapentaplegic (dpp) at the anterior-posterior and wingless (wg) at the dorsal-ventral compartment boundaries controls growth of the wing with respect to the A/P and D/V axes. The growth-promoting effects of these organizers are thought to be indirect, since growth ...

A Drosophila homolog of the serine/threonine kinase GSK-3 beta, encoded by the zest-white3/shaggy gene (zw3), has been implicated as a maternally provided antagonist of zygotic signaling by the secreted segmentation gene wingless (wg). The wg signal apparently causes a spatially localized inhibition of the ubiquitous repressor function of zw3. This double negative mechanism of signal transducti...

BACKGROUND Diagnosis of active pulmonary and paranasal involvement in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) can be difficult. The diagnostic value of gallium-67 scintigraphy in WG is unclear. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the added diagnostic value of gallium-67 scintigraphy in patients with WG with suspected granulomatous inflammation in the paranasal and chest regions. METHODS Retrospective...

We report on a patient with biopsy proven systemic Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) with a granulomatous necrotising manifestation of WG in the liver, lung, parotid gland and skin with subsequent death of liver failure. Liver involvement in WG is an exceedingly rare, though potentially fatal, organ manifestation of WG.

*System Devices Research Laboratories †System Platforms Research Laboratories Two types of waveguide photodiodes (WG-PD)  an evanescently coupled photodiode (EC-WG-PD) and a separated-absorption-and-multiplication avalanche photodiode (WG-APD)  were developed for use in 40Gbps receivers. The EC-WG-PD is much more robust than a conventional WG-PD under high optical input operation because of i...

Wingless (Wg) signalling regulates the expression of its target genes through Pangolin, Armadillo and their interacting co-factors. In a genetic screen for Wg signalling components, we found that imitation switch (ISWI), a chromatin-remodelling ATPase, had a positive role in transducing the canonical Wg signal, promoting the expression of the Wg target senseless. ISWI is found in several chroma...

The weak Galerkin (WG) methods have been introduced in [11, 16] for solving the biharmonic equation. The purpose of this paper is to develop an algorithm to implement the WG methods effectively. This can be achieved by eliminating local unknowns to obtain a global system with significant reduction of size. In fact this reduced global system is equivalent to the Schur complements of the WG metho...

Wingless (Wg) is an important signaling molecule in the development of Drosophila, but little is known about its signal transduction pathway. Genetic evidence indicates that another segment polarity gene, dishevelled (dsh) is required for Wg signaling. We have recently developed a cell culture system for Wg protein activity, and using this in vitro system as well as intact Drosophila embryos, w...

The patterning of the Drosophila mesoderm requires Wingless (Wg), one of the founding members of a large family of secreted glycoproteins, the Wnt family. Little is known about how Wg provides patterning information to the mesoderm, which is neither an epithelium nor contains the site of Wg production. By studying specification of muscle founder cells as marked by the lineage-specific transcrip...
