Zinc is a structural component of many regulatory molecules including transcription factors and signaling molecules. We report that two alternate signaling pathways of protein kinase C (PKC) activation involving either the lipid second messengers (diacylglycerol and its mimetics, the phorbol esters) or reactive oxygen converge at the zinc finger of the regulatory domain. They all trigger the re...

Zinc is an essential trace metal ion for growth, but an excess of Zn is toxic and microorganisms express diverse resistance mechanisms. To understand global bacterial responses to excess Zn, we conducted transcriptome profiling experiments comparing Escherichia coli MG1655 grown under control conditions and cells grown with a toxic, sublethal ZnSO4 concentration (0.2 mM). Cultures were grown in...

This study was conducted to determine the ability of an alternative salt form of 1% Zn, Zn propionate, to induce molt in 66-wk-old hens. The hens were randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups of 27 or 28 birds each: a) molted conventionally by feed withdrawal, b) 1% Zn as Zn acetate, c) 1% Zn as Zn propionate, or d) nonmolted control for 9 d. Feed intake was (P < 0.05) depressed in Zn acetate an...

This communication presents the pH-dependent chelation of Zn(2+) ions with the imidazole groups of poly(1-vinylimidazole) (PVIm) and DNA polyion complex formation with the zinc-chelated PVIm (PVIm-Zn) via chelated Zn(2+) ions. The resulting PVIm-Zn/DNA complexes exhibit no significant cytotoxicity and show outstanding gene expression.

Evidence is presented that DNA polymerase of avian myeloblastosis virus has an obligatory zinc requirement for activity. Previous studies indicate that the purified polymerase contains zinc in a stoichiometry of about 1 g-atom/mole. We now find that the enzyme-bound zinc is exchangeable with radioactive (65)Zn; after isoelectric focusing, the radioactive (65)Zn is coincident with polymerase act...

Single crystals of glycine zinc sulfate penta-hydrate [systematic name: hexa-aqua-zinc tetra-aquadiglycinezinc bis-(sulfate)], [Zn(H2O)6][Zn(C2H5NO2)2(H2O)4](SO4)2, have been grown by isothermal evaporation from aqueous solution at room temperature and characterized by single-crystal neutron diffraction. The unit cell contains two unique ZnO6 octa-hedra on sites of symmetry -1 and two SO4 tetra...

Optimal geometries, charge distributions, bond analysis, changes of Gibbs free energy, entropies and enthalpies of hydration, and hydrolysis reactions for mononuclear species of Zn(2+) including hydrated and hydrolysis complexes were investigated using quantum chemical calculations in the gas phase. Optimized geometrical structures showed that the stable hydrated and hydrolysis zinc species wit...
