Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed on the adsorption of longchain alkanethiols to the surface of gold or alkylsilanes to hydroxylated surfaces are well-ordered organic surfaces that permit control over the properties of the interface at the molecular scale. The abililty to present molecules, peptides, and proteins at the interface make SAMs especially useful for fundamental studies of prot...

Functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are the focus of ongoing investigations because they can be chemically tuned to control their structure and dynamics for a wide variety of applications, including electrochemistry, catalysis, and as models of biological interfaces. Here we combine reflection 2D infrared vibrational echo spectroscopy (R-2D IR) and molecular dynamics simulations to ...

This article describes the design, synthesis, and study of alkoxyphenylethanethiol-based adsorbates with one (R1ArMT), two (R2ArMT), and three (R3ArMT) pendant octadecyloxy chains substituted at the 4-, 3,5-, and 3,4,5-positions, respectively, of the phenylethanethiol group. These adsorbates are being developed for use in the preparation of compositionally versatile "mixed" self-assembled monol...

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), prepared by the immersion method, from ethanolic solutions containing , -alkanedithiol, n-alkanethiol or mixed thiol/dithiol solutions, with 6, 9 and 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, have been investigated. The amount of adsorbate and the SAM stability in alkaline medium is evaluated by reductive desorption of the prepared monolayers by cyclic voltammetry. A...

Patterned self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates on gold films were used as constraining elements in forming shapes, in a strategy based on minimizing interfacial free energy. Circular right cylinders, catenoids, and other related shapes having centimeter dimensions were formed from poly(dimethylsi1oxane) (PDMS) in a system comprising patterned SAMs and a n aqueous solution of sodi...

The effect of pH on the adhesion of silica and polystyrene latex nanoparticles, presenting hydroxyl and carboxyl acid surface chemistries respectively, to self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has been investigated. The SAMs studied were 1-dodecanethiol, 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid and an original pyridine-terminated SAM. Adhesion of nanoparticles to the SAMs was found to decrease with increasing pH ...

We demonstrate the use of microwave radiation as a tool to accelerate the formation of perfluoroalkylsilane based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on silicon oxide surfaces. Surface coverage of these SAMs of monoreactive perfluoroalkylsilanes increased in proportion to the duration over which the solutions were heated by microwave radiation.

Over the past several years, various fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (F-SAMs) on gold have been used to study the interfacial properties of fluorocarbon interfaces. This review focuses on the structures of selected F-SAMs and describes how the structures relate to various interfacial properties, such as wettability, friction, X-ray induced damage and ion-surface collisions. 2003 Elsevier ...

We report a new inkless catalytic muCP technique that achieves accurate, fast, and complete pattern reproduction on SAMs of Boc- and TBS-protected thiols immobilized on gold using a polyurethane-acrylate stamp functionalized with covalently bound sulfonic acids. Pattern transfer is complete at room temperature just after one minute of contact and renders sub-200 nm size structures of chemically...

In this study, we investigated the high-temperature electronic transport behavior of spin-coated PEDOT:PSS top-contact molecular ensemble junctions based on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) oligophenylene dithiols. We observed irreversible temperature-dependent charge at regime over 320 K. The effective contact resistance and normalized decreased with increasing temperature (320 to 400 K), wher...
