the significance of the study of deixis was then mentioned. the purpose of the present study from the outset was to provide a comprehensive overview of all kinds of deixis in persian, describing and defining each in true while considering them structurally and semantically. chapter two consisted of two main parts. a review of the english studies in this respect, besides presenting persian literature. generally, the most effective work on deixis is fillmore (1975). lyons (1968 and 1977) and levinson (1983) have investigated the phenomenon, too. hurford and healsy (1983) and halliday and hasan (1976) have also discussed the issue, though not considering all its different types. brown and yule (1983), palmer (1976 and 1981) and halliday (1985) were among those scholars who passed through it quickly. as we did not have any persian study specially devoted to this topic, the second part of the chapter was just an attempt for searching points and notes asserted by persian scholars which were some how related to the phenomenon. chapter three is the result of getting into grips with persian deixis. in that chapter all five types of deixis have been elaborated and analysed in full details. this contribution has laid its foundations upon deictic expression through actual utterances, which were gathered with much care and patience. to choose the least and yet most typical examples i have revised the selected material several times and finally i ended up with exactly 300 examples, almost all of which were analysed structurally and semantically. the obtaining results of working with the corpus brought about many interesting points which were given through the text. along with my contribution throughout that chapter are other scholars; relevant assertions and suggestions about deixis.
