Fault step-overs with linking dip-slip faults are common features on long strike-slip fault systems worldwide. It has been noted by various researchers that under some circumstances, earthquakes can jump across fault step-overs to cascade into large events, while under other circumstances rupture is arrested at stepovers. There is also evidence that fault step-overs may be preferential location...

We present a multichain slip-spring model with fluctuating number of entanglements for dynamics of dense polymer melts, which is based on the single chain slip-spring model by Likhtman. By introducing the exclude volume interactions, a multichain version of slip-spring model can be presented with little modification. With this extension, inhomogeneous polymer system can be described properly. T...

Since Iran plateau is located in the Alpine-Himalayan Orogenic belt, it is recognized as a region with a high seismic risk. Thus, investigation of geodynamic activities of the faults, their slip rates and corresponding deformation fields is very important for quantification of possible seismic risk in this region. The aim of this study is to analyze the tectonic features of eastern part of Iran...

The 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake (MW 7.6) (20 September 1999, 17:47:15.9 UTC) (located at 23.853 N, 120.816 E, and depth of 7.5 km) inflicted severe regional scale damage to Taiwan. The strong-motion wavefield was captured by a dense network of stations (with average station spacing of 5 km), which represents the most complete strong-motion dataset to date to use to study the kinematic source proces...

One of the ultimate goals in particle accelerator cavity design is to establish a model that integrates the grain orientations of an ingot slice, slip activity during deep drawing, and dislocation substructure evolution because of slip system interactions, which governs subsequent recrystallization. In order to understand the slip behavior during deep drawing of large grain Nb, it is fi rst nec...

FOF1-ATP synthase converts two energetic "currencies" of the cell (ATP and protonmotive force, pmf) by coupling two rotary motors/generators. Their coupling efficiency is usually very high. Uncoupled proton leakage (slip) has only been observed in chloroplast enzyme at unphysiologically low nucleotide concentration. We investigated the properties of proton slip in chromatophores (sub-bacterial ...

We study deep aseismic slip along the central section of the San Jacinto Fault, near the Anza Seismic Gap, in southern California. Elevated strain-rates following the remote Mw7.2 April 4, 2010 El Mayor-Cucapah and the local Mw5.4, July 7, 2010 Collins Valley earthquakes were recorded by Plate Boundary Observatory borehole strain-meters near Anza, and were accompanied by vigorous aftershock seq...

In the context of numerical simulations of elastodynamic ruptures, we compare friction laws, including the linear slip-weakening (SW) law, the Dieterich-Ruina (DR) law, and the Free Volume (FV) law. The FV law is based on microscopic physics, incorporating Shear Transformation Zone (STZ) Theory which describes local, non-affine rearrangements within the granular fault gouge. A dynamic state var...

The role of geometrically necessary dislocations in providing macroscopic strengthening is reviewed with particle reinforcement as an example. The general relation between the Nye tensor and slip along a curvilinear slip line net is derived to emphasise the importance of curvature of slip lines upon the rate of dislocation storage. 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Al...

Von Kármán’s problem of a rotating disk in an infinite viscous fluid is extended to the case where the disk surface admits partial slip. The nonlinear similarity equations are integrated accurately for the full range of slip coefficients. The effects of slip are discussed. An existence proof is also given.
