Due to depleting water supplies and the cultivation of high water-demanding crops such as lucerne, effect deficits in crop production has become a major concern, especially semiarid regions China. A six-year field experiment (2012–2018) was conducted evaluate soil recovery fertility after lucerne-to-crop conversions on western Loess Plateau Six rotation treatments (lucerne initially grew from 2...

1. The relations between food intake, reticulo-ruminal motility and abomasal digesta outflow were investigated in ewes receiving lucerne (Medicago sativa) v. orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) hay. Abomasal digesta outflow was recorded continuously by means of an electromagnetic flowmeter probe inserted into a duodenal T-shape cannula and the motility using strain-gauge force transducers. Volum...

1. Three diets of barley-canola-seed (Brassica campestris), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or chopped brome-grass (Bromus inermis) were given at intervals of 3 h to closely-shorn Suffolk wethers held at a temperature of 1-5 degree (cold) or 22-24 degree (warm). Apparent digestibility of organic matter (OM) and nitrogen was reduced by 0.08-0.05 and 0.04 units respectively for lucerne and brome-grass ...

The incorporation of lucerne meal in the diet of chicks prevents normal gains in weight (Alder, 1946; Draper, 1948; Cooney, Butts & Bacon, 1948; Lepkovsky, Shaeleff, Peterson & Perry, 1950; Heywang, 1950; Kodras, Cooney & Butts, 1951 a, b). This effect is attributed to the saponin fraction of lucerne (Peterson, 195oa, b; Heywang & Bird, 1954), which has been shown to be a complex mixture of rel...

An Italian "Dalita" ryegrass (Lolium italicum) and a European lucerne (Medicago sativa) were harvested at 5 different growth stages to determine the anatomical factors limiting their digestibility and in particular the effects of lignification of the tissues. In vitro digestibility, cell wall contents of the whole plant and stem of lucerne and of the whole plant, stem and leaf blade of ryegrass...

Lucerne (Medicago sativa) has many qualities associated with sustainable agriculture such as nitrogen fixation and high biomass yield. Therefore, there is interest in whether lucerne is a suitable biomass substrate for bioethanol production, and if hydrothermal pretreatment (HTT) of lucerne improves enzymatic convertibility, providing sufficient enzymatic conversion of carbohydrate to simple su...

Speakers from the canton of Lucerne are infamous for spelling Middle High German (MHG) as when communicating in written Swiss German, e.g. Kind (‘child’) as . This phenomenon has been examined only impressionistically by phoneticians. This study provides a first account of this peculiarity of Lucerne Swiss German spellers: an analysis of normalised formant frequencies of two unde...

The benefits, costs and risk from introducing aluminium-tolerant lucerne (alfalfa) into a sheep grazing enterprise, consisting of a perennial ryegrass-based pasture, located in the high rainfall zone of Victoria, Australia, were estimated using a discounted cash flow analysis. Two ‘what if’ scenarios were compared for a modelled representative case study farm; 1) where aluminium toxicity occurr...

The complete genome sequences of two endophytic Streptomyces sp. strains, LUP30 and LUP47B, were analyzed. These strains were isolated from surface-sterilized roots of lucerne plants from South Australia and were found to promote the growth of the rhizobial partner in vitro and significantly increased nodulation and nitrogen fixation in lucerne plants.

The effects of altering forage particle size and source of rapidly degradable carbohydrates on in situ degradation and ruminal variables were studied in four Iranian male sheep. The study was designed as a Latin square with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments including two carbohydrate sources (pelleted beet pulp vs. maizeand barley-based concentrate) and two lucerne particle sizes (2.3...
