The breakdown of Lorentz’s and CPT invariance, as described by the Extension of the Standard Model, gives rise to a modification of the dispersion relation of particles. Consequences of such a modification are reviewed in the framework of pulsar kicks induced by neutrino oscillations (activesterile conversion). A peculiar feature of the modified energy-momentum relations is the occurrence of te...

X–rays are detected from the pulsar–Be star binary PSR 1259−63 only after apastron passage. We suggest that the X–rays result from accretion on to the pulsar magnetosphere of matter captured from the Be star wind. The capture efficiency changes markedly at this phase, in line with the observations, provided that the wind is slow (∼ sonic) at large distances from the Be star. Accepted by The Ast...

In this paper, we present a study of orthogonal polarization modes in the radio emission of PSR B1133+16, conducted within the frame of simultaneous, multi-frequency, single-pulse observations. Simultaneously observing at two frequencies (1.41 GHz and 4.85 GHz) provides the means to study the bandwidth of polarization features such as the polarization position angle. We find two main results. F...

It is no longer necessary to “sell” the idea of pulsar kicks, the notion that neutron stars receive a large velocity (a few hundred to a thousand km s) at birth. However, the origin of the kicks remains mysterious. We review the physics of different kick mechanisms, including hydrodynamically driven, neutrino and magnetically driven kicks.

Gamma-ray photons from young pulsars allow the deepest insight into the properties and interactions of high-energy particles with magnetic and photon fields in a pulsar magnetosphere. Measurements with the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory have led to the detection of nearly ten γ-ray pulsars . Although quite a variety of individual signatures is found for these pulsars, some general characteristic...

Of the current known pulsars, the Crab pulsar (B0531+21) is one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves. The relatively large timing noise of the Crab causes its phase evolution to depart from a simple spin-down model. This effect needs to be taken in to account when performing time domain searches for the Crab pulsar in order to avoid severely degrading the search efficiency. The ...

Path integration provides guidance based on cues generated by a point of reference (usually start location) and subsequent self-movement. This well-established mechanism suggests start location may have special significance and might provide a useful window into memory in rats. In an earlier study rats did not learn to return to a start location in a four-arm radial water maze when the start lo...
