40Ar/39Ar geochronology of the Drakensberg continental flood basalts: Understanding large argon isotopic variations in mafic groundmass and plagioclase size fractions

چکیده

The extrusive component of the Karoo Large Igneous Province, Drakensberg Continental Flood basalts South Africa and Lesotho, is mainly composed altered tholeiitic without uraniferous mineral phases that are suitable for high-precision dating (e.g. baddeleyite or zircon), thus restricted to 40Ar/39Ar groundmass plagioclase. Previous dates plagioclase span from 178.9 ± 4.2 Ma 189.2 3.3 Ma, while most range between 180 183 (Jourdan et al., 2007b; Moulin 2011; 2017). Dating mafic rocks can be hindered by presence xenocrysts (inherited 40Ar), ubiquitous alteration phases. Separation protocols acid leaching used minimize effect these issues, although previous studies Drakensburg lavas did not interpret their within a petrochronological context, they open inaccuracy. We have cathodoluminescence imaging, QEMSCAN analysis optical petrology thin sections show two distinct generations occur lavas, at least different K-rich (adularia clays) Ca- occurred. been obtained some acid-leached unleached aliquots both generations. Our results i) large, cluster-forming yield older interpreted xenocrystic, ii) apparently unaltered in hosts secondary Ar reservoirs related alteration, iii) enhance effects 37,39Ar recoil conclude accurate date applies entire thickness lava stacks 184.4 1.2 which was matrix-forming contains highest proportion non-inherited radiogenic 40Ar, affected suffer isotope recoil.

Understanding cratonic flood basalts

The origin of continental flood basalts has been debated for decades. These eruptions often produce millions of cubic kilometers of basalt on timescales of only a million years. Although flood basalts are found in a variety of settings, no locale is more puzzling than cratonic areas such as southern Africa or the Siberian craton, where strong, thick lithosphere is breached by these large basalt...

Origin of Argon-Lead Isotopic Correlation in Basalts

Sarda et al. (1) show that there is a correlation between Pb/Pb and maximum Ar/ Ar values in Atlantic basalts. The authors argue that this correlation is due to mixing between a degassed-depleted upper mantle (Ar/Ar . 40,000 and Pb/Pb ' 17.8) and a recycled component in the mantle (HIMU) that has unradiogenic Ar resulting from recycling of atmospheric Ar (Ar/ Ar 5 300). However, devolatilizatio...

High water content in primitive continental flood basalts

As the main constituent of large igneous provinces, the generation of continental flood basalts (CFB) that are characterized by huge eruption volume (>10(5) km(3)) within short time span (<1-3 Ma) is in principle caused by an abnormally high temperature, extended decompression, a certain amount of mafic source rocks (e.g., pyroxenite), or an elevated H2O content in the mantle source. These four...

Understanding the Chlorine Isotopic Composition of Apatites in Lunar Basalts

Introduction: On Earth δCl = ~0 ± 5 ‰ [1]. For lunar rocks elevated δCl values of up to 35 ‰ have been reported in apatites [1,2]. The initial study interpreted the elevated δCl in lunar rocks as a result of metal chlorides degassing in low-H2O environments [1]. Additional data [3,4] have shown high-δCl values in samples with apatite containing appreciable amounts of H2O (>2000 ppm). Metasomati...
