A Comparative Study of High Temperature Tensile and Creep Testing Between Standard and Miniature Specimens: Applicability and Limits

Abstract This study concerns the quasi-static and time-dependent mechanical behavior obtained via miniaturized electro-thermal testing (ETMT) approach for single crystal (SX) conventional cast Mar-M-247 superalloy. The experimental outcome was benchmarked against standardized procedures. It is found that tensile yielding can be captured accurately by ETMT up to 1100 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ C, provided appropriate type of thermocouple (T/C) chosen. Furthermore, creep rupture underestimated set-up. High repeatability time SX case, whereas a significant scatter observed case. discrepancies are assessed in detail; discussion centers around analytical practical considerations, such as temperature uncertainty due parasitic voltage choice T/C, microstructural change result Joule heating, representative gauge volume, strain rate non-linearity. Consequently, applicability limits examined critically, improvements were suggested where appropriate.
