A method for optimization against cure-induced distortion in composite parts

Abstract This paper describes a novel method developed for the optimization of composite components against distortion caused by cure-induced residual stresses. A ply stack alteration algorithm is described, which coupled to parametrized CAD/FE model used optimization. Elastic strain energy in 1D spring elements, constrain structure during analysis, serves as an objective function incorporating aspects global/local part stiffness predicted distortion. Design variables such number and stacking sequence plies, geometric parameters are used. The problem solved using commercial software combined with Python scripts. exemplified case study stiffened panel subjected buckling loads. Results presented, effectiveness reduce effects discussed.
