A MODERN MULTICENTENNIAL RECORD OF RADIOCARBON VARIABILITY FROM AN EXACTLY DATED BIVALVE CHRONOLOGY AT THE TREE NOB SITE (ALASKA COASTAL CURRENT)

چکیده

ABSTRACT Quantifying the marine radiocarbon reservoir effect, offsets (ΔR), and ΔR variability over time is critical to improving dating estimates of samples while also providing a proxy water mass dynamics. In northeastern Pacific, where no high-resolution series has yet been established, we sampled ( 14 C) from exactly dated growth increments in multicentennial chronology long-lived bivalve, Pacific geoduck Paneopea generosa ) at Tree Nob site, coastal British Columbia, Canada. Samples were taken approximately decadal intervals 1725 CE 1920 indicate average values 256 ± 22 years (1σ) consistent with existing discrete estimates. Temporal small relative analogous Atlantic records except for an unusually old-water event, 1802–1812. The correlation between sea surface temperature (SST) reconstructed increment width weakly significant (r 2 = .29, p .03), indicating warm generally old, when 1802–1812 interval excluded. This contains oldest (–2.1σ) anomaly, that coincident coldest (–2.7σ) anomalies reconstruction. An additional 32 C spanning 1952–1980 detrended using bomb pulse curve. Significant positive correlations identified data annual El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) summer SST such cooler conditions are associated older water. Thus, relatively stable weak, potentially inconsistent associations climate variables, but capable infrequent excursions as illustrated by cold, interval.

Radiocarbon chronology of the mammoth site at Niederweningen, Switzerland: Results from dating bones, teeth, wood, and peat

The peat section at Niederweningen is a site of spectacular excavations of numerous bones of mammoth and other animals that was first recognized in the late 19th century. In 1987/1990, new excavations provided more peat material, which was radiocarbon dated to 33,000 C years BP and 42,000 C years BP. The first AMS radiocarbon ages of mammoth bones from 1890/1891 excavations placed the age betwe...

Radiocarbon variability in the western equatorial Pacific inferred from a highresolution coral record from Nauru Island

We have generated a high resolution coral A14C record spanning the last 50 years to document the seasonal and interannual redistribution of surface waters in the western tropical Pacific. Prebomb (1947-1956) A14C values average -63%0 and have a total range of 30%0. Values begin to increase in 1957, reaching a maximum of 137%o in mid-1983. Large interannual variability of up to 80%0 closely foll...

A comparison of cloud properties at a coastal and inland site at the North Slope of Alaska

[1] We have examined differences in cloud liquid water paths (LWPs) at a coastal (Barrow) and an inland (Atqasuk) location on the North Slope of Alaska using microwave radiometer (MWR) data collected by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program for the period June–September 1999. Revised retrieval procedures and a filtering algorithm to eliminate data contaminate...
