A multiscale approach to targeted docetaxel formulations: combination therapy, nanotechnology, electrospinning and 3D printing—a review

Abstract Background Cancer remains one of the leading causes death worldwide. Docetaxel, first marketed as ‘Taxotere’, has been approved for use a chemotherapeutic management gastric, breast, neck, head, non-small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer. Main body Taxotere, is docetaxel formulation solubilized in tween 80 13% ethanol solution. It effective agent but numerous toxic effects due to polysorbate. Aside from this, challenges with administration during mixing diluent exist. Poor results gel formation while addition drug mix an infusion may result micelle formation. These have necessitated remodeling currently available formulation, none made it clinical setting alternative. Efforts also develop oral ease drug. Attempts other dosage forms, notably transdermal formulations implants target cells avoiding systemic side effects. Formulation methods such nanoformulation, coupling active moieties, 3D fabrication well electrospinning employed. Conclusions Development novel different needs appears promising some trials.
