A Note on The Local Nilpotence of 4-Engel Groups

Recently Havas and Vaughan-Lee proved that 4-Engel groups are locally nilpotent. Their proof relies on the fact that a certain 4-Engel group T is nilpotent and this they prove using a computer and the Knuth-Bendix algorithm. In this paper we give a short hand-proof of the nilpotency of T .

ON THE SURJECTIVITY OF ENGEL WORDS ON PSL(2, q)

We investigate the surjectivity of the word map defined by the n-th Engel word on the groups PSL(2, q) and SL(2, q). For SL(2, q), we show that this map is surjective onto the subset SL(2, q)\{−id} ⊂ SL(2, q) provided that q ≥ q0(n) is sufficiently large. Moreover, we give an estimate for q0(n). We also present examples demonstrating that this does not hold for all q. We conclude that the n-th ...

A note on Sturmian words

We describe an algorithm which, given a factor of a Sturmian word, computes the next factor of the same length in the lexicographic order in linear time. It is based on a combinatorial property of Sturmian words which is related with the Burrows-Wheeler transformation.

A Note on Antichains of Words

We can compress the word ‘banana’ as xyyz, where x = ‘b’, y = ‘an’,z = ‘a’. We say that ‘banana’ encounters yy. Thus a ‘coded’ version of yy shows up in ‘banana’. The relation ‘u encounters w’ is transitive, and thus generates an order on words. We study antichains under this order. In particular we show that in this order there is an infinite antichain of binary words avoiding overlaps. AMS Su...

A Note on a Conjecture of Duval and Sturmian Words

We prove a long standing conjecture of Duval in the special case of Sturmian words. Mathematics Subject Classification. 68R15, 37B10. Let U be a nonempty word on a finite alphabet A. A nonempty word B different from U is called a border of U if B is both a prefix and suffix of U. We say U is bordered if U admits a border, otherwise U is said to be unbordered. For example, U = 011001011 is borde...
