A Novel Self-Actuated Linear Drive for Long-Range-of-Motion Electromechanical Systems

Obtaining powered linear movement over a long range of motion is common yet challenging task, as the majority actuators have limited ranges determined by their functioning mechanisms. In this paper, authors present novel belt-based self-actuated drive (B-SALD), in which self-powered moving platform slides on slotted track with essentially unlimited (only length track). Unlike traditional rack-and-pinion mechanism, B-SALD system uses double-sided timing belt power-transmitting element. With teeth its inner surface, interacts pulley for own circulation; outer rail parallel slots and drives translation platform. The unique mechanism generates multiple distinct advantages: no lubrication required; simple inexpensive to manufacture; it provides an inherent compliance buffer shock loading. experiments conducted preliminary prototype, has been demonstrated that able provide accurate positioning continuous control, overall mechanical efficiency 70% load range, capability generating large force output desired manner.
