A perspective of low carbon lithium-ion battery recycling technology

With the significant rise in application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) electromobility, amount spent LIBs is also increasing. LIB recycling technologies which conserve sustainable resources and protect environment need to be developed for achieving a circular economy. Recycling will reduce environmental impact by reducing carbon dioxide emissions terms saving natural raw materials mining. This work reviewed most advanced ongoing technologies, categorized according components cells, including cathodes, anodes, electrolyte separators. Most focus on recovery valuable metals, particular cobalt hydrometallurgical method from cathodes. The commercial process based combination pyrometallurgical was commercially Umicore, Retriev, mainly focusing technology optimizing recovering efficiency. There research undergoing recover graphite anodes through Fenton oxidation, froth flotation thermal treatment with process. As are under development, there great potential emission this should research. high develop more reduced emission, therefore contribute “Net zero” ambition.
