A regularizing property of the 2D-eikonal equation
We prove that any 2-dimensional solution ψ ∈ W 1+ 1 3,3 loc of the eikonal equation has locally Lipschitz gradient ∇ψ except at a locally finite number of vortex-points. A related regularizing effect is also obtained for general solutions of the Burgers’ equation. متن کاملA kinetic eikonal equation
We analyse the linear kinetic transport equation with a BGK relaxation operator. We study the large scale hyperbolic limit (t, x) → (t/ε, x/ε). We derive a new type of limiting Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which is analogous to the classical eikonal equation derived from the heat equation with small diffusivity. We prove well-posedness of the phase problem and convergence towards the viscosity sol...

Abstract. We use a Schrödinger wave equation formalism to solve the eikonal equation. We show that a solution to the eikonal equation is obtained in the limit as ~ → 0 of the solution to the corresponding linear Schrödinger equation. The Schrödinger equation corresponding to the eikonal turns out to be a generalized, screened Poisson equation. Despite being linear, it does not have a closed-for...
متن کاملNon-oriented solutions of the eikonal equation
We study a new formulation for the eikonal equation |∇u| = 1 on a bounded subset of R. Instead of a vector field ∇u, we consider a field P of orthogonal projections on 1-dimensional subspaces, with divP ∈ L. We prove existence and uniqueness for solutions of the equation P divP = 0. We give a geometric description, comparable with the classical case, and we prove that such solutions exist only ...

S U M M A R Y In this paper, several methods for the solution of the eikonal equation are investigated. Using the method of characteristics, traveltimes are computed along rays. Approximate solutions of the eikonal equation can also be obtained. From Fermat’s principle, first-order changes in the traveltime can be found by integrating along initial ray trajectories. Alternatively, linearized ra...
