Abstract Rolling stock connection systems are key to running longer and heavier trains as they provide both the connections of vehicles damping, providing longitudinal suspension train. This paper focuses on evolution stiffness damping systems. Focus is freight rolling stock, but passenger draw gears also examined. It was found that have evolved from buff chain system used in pioneer railways 1800s modern auto-coupler in-service worldwide today. Refined versions coupling are, however, still use EU, UK, South America India. A wide range currently utilised, AAR coupler (Janney coupler) remains most popular. further variation persists SA3 (improved Wilson which an alternative design mainly throughout former Soviet Union. Restricting review allowed focus draft revealed polymer, polymer-friction, steel spring-friction, hydraulic sliding sill cushioning Along with single compressive gear units balanced floating plate configurations presented.
