A Survey on Perceptually Optimized Video Coding

To provide users with more realistic visual experiences, videos are developing in the trends of Ultra High Definition (UHD), Frame Rate (HFR), Dynamic Range (HDR), Wide Color Gammut (WCG), and high clarity. However, data amount increases exponentially, which requires efficiency video compression for storage network transmission. Perceptually optimized coding aims to maximize by exploiting redundancies. In this article, we present a broad systematic survey on perceptually coding. Firstly, problem formulation framework coding, includes perception modeling, quality assessment, perceptual optimization. Secondly, recent advances factors, computational models, assessment models presented. Thirdly, review optimizations from four key aspects, including bit allocation, rate-distortion optimization, transform quantization, filtering enhancement. each part, formulation, working flow, advances, advantages, challenges Fourthly, performances latest standards tools experimentally analyzed. Finally, challenging issues future opportunities identified.
