A tough woman around tender men: Dilma Rousseff, gendered double bind, and misogynistic backlash

Dilma Rousseff's presidency ended in controversial form. The first woman elected to the position Brazil, 2016 impeachment was seen as a coup by her supporters and necessary step for democracy detractors. With Brazilian economy facing its worst recession history Car Wash corruption scandal ravaging political class, critics continually raised questions about leadership style abilities. This article analyzes how this criticism part can be attributed gendered subjective understandings of preferred traits. Using thematic analysis interviews with actors five different states conducted 2017 2018, we demonstrate that gender stereotypes sexism fueled criticisms women's leadership. While riddled problems, president's abilities were scrutinized distinct ways, indicating double bind backlash against women politics.
