Active biological mechanisms: transforming energy into motion in molecular motors

چکیده

Abstract Unless one embraces activities as foundational, understanding in mechanisms requires an account of the means by which entities biological engage their activities—an that does not merely explain terms more basic and activities. Recent research on molecular motors (myosin kinesin) exemplifies such account, explains free energy constraints. After describing characteristic “stepping” these molecules mapping stages those steps onto motors’ hydrolytic cycles, researchers pieced together from images different hydrolyzation states accounts how chemical ATP is transformed constrained environments into motors. We argue New Mechanism’s standard set analytic categories—entities (parts), (operations), organization—should be expanded to include constraints energetics. Not only expansion required descriptively capture but, importantly a philosophical point view, it enables non-regressive mechanisms. In other words, this mechanistic explanation avoids regress “all way down.” Rather, bottoms out

Embedding dual function into molecular motors through collective motion

Protein motors, such as kinesins and dyneins, bind to a microtubule and travel along it in a specific direction. Previously, it was thought that the directionality for a given motor was constant in the absence of an external force. However, the directionality of the kinesin-5 Cin8 was recently found to change as the number of motors that bind to the same microtubule is increased. Here, we intro...

Engineering Nanoscale Biological Molecular Motors

In his book ‘What is life?’, Erwin Schrödinger equated death with the living cell decaying into thermal equilibrium with its surroundings. That is, when a cell is unable to continue using the free energy of its environment to keep order, it decays into a state of disorder. Evolution has led to incredibly beautiful, complex, and astonishing constructs called molecular motors to maintain order an...

Biological motors: Energy storage in myosin molecules

A recent experiment of exceptional complexity has shown that a myosin may lose its ATP but store the energy from it and attach to actin and perform a working stroke several hundred milliseconds later.

Unidirectional rotary motion in achiral molecular motors.

Control of the direction of motion is an essential feature of biological rotary motors and results from the intrinsic chirality of the amino acids from which the motors are made. In synthetic autonomous light-driven rotary motors, point chirality is transferred to helical chirality, and this governs their unidirectional rotation. However, achieving directional rotary motion in an achiral molecu...

Chemistry in motion--unidirectional rotating molecular motors.

Molecules are in constant motion, if not frozen around 0 K, but their Brownian motion is random. Overcoming this randomizing effect and generating directional motion at the molecular level with artificial systems is still a challenge. Research in this area is inspired by the vision of transferring the concept of an engine or a motor to the molecular level. That this is possible is illustrated b...
