Agricultural extensification enhances functional diversity but not phylogenetic diversity in Mediterranean olive groves: A case study with ant and bird communities

چکیده

Agroforests are of well-known importance for biodiversity conservation, especially in the tropics, because they structurally stable and may resemble natural forests. Previous studies have characterized jointly taxonomic, functional phylogenetic diversity these agro-ecosystems to comprehensively examine mechanisms by which agriculture impacts on biodiversity. However, this approach has been barely applied other woody crops economic importance, such as olive grove, is a remarkable overwintering habitat frugivorous/insectivorous birds from central northern Europe, whose original distribution overlaps with Mediterranean hotspot. We examined effects landscape complexity intensive management practices at local scale (recurrent plowing pesticides use) animal communities inhabiting groves. Since response traits or clades vary across different taxonomic groups, we conducted our study two levels: ants, considered semi-sessile organisms, birds, exhibit high dispersal capacity. In neither type nor had an effect (PD) indices. Extensively managed farms harbored bird higher values (FD), but only was evident when considering cultivated (productive) zones within farm (i.e., infield diversity). Ant assemblages intensively exhibited lower level clustering than those located extensive farms, vanished excluding non-cultivated zones. increased complexity. Our results indicate that PD FD responses farming intensification Although does not erode due existence redundancy, loss species associated modern leads reduction being indicative complementarity. This provides evidence land-use extensification (extensive diversification) promotes more functionally rich findings also show need set apart (e.g., hedgerows, margins) evaluating effectiveness agri-environment schemes joint consideration areas obscure benefits

Phylogenetic Beta Diversity Metrics, Trait Evolution and Inferring the Functional Beta Diversity of Communities

The beta diversity of communities along gradients has fascinated ecologists for decades. Traditionally such studies have focused on the species composition of communities, but researchers are becoming increasingly interested in analyzing the phylogenetic composition in the hope of achieving mechanistic insights into community structure. To date many metrics of phylogenetic beta diversity have b...

Non-linear responses of functional diversity and redundancy to agricultural intensification at the field scale in Mediterranean arable plant communities

Despite their key roles in agroecosystems, species diversity of arable plants is being severely reduced by agricultural intensification, although it remains unclear whether functional diversity is affected in a similar way. We analyzed the response of four functional traits of arable plants (specific leaf area, canopy height, seed mass and flowering onset) to agricultural intensification in Med...

Spatial heterogeneity increases diversity and stability in grassland bird communities.

Grasslands are inherently dynamic in space and time, evolving with frequent disturbance from fire and herbivores. As a consequence of human actions, many remaining grasslands have become homogenous, which has led to reduced ecosystem function, biodiversity loss, and decreased ecological services. Previous research has shown that restoring inherent heterogeneity to grasslands can increase avian ...

Phylogenetic diversity, functional trait diversity and extinction: avoiding tipping points and worst-case losses.

The phylogenetic diversity measure, ('PD'), measures the relative feature diversity of different subsets of taxa from a phylogeny. At the level of feature diversity, PD supports the broad goal of biodiversity conservation to maintain living variation and option values. PD calculations at the level of lineages and features include those integrating probabilities of extinction, providing estimate...

In situ phylogenetic structure and diversity of wild Bradyrhizobium communities.

Bacteria often infect their hosts from environmental sources, but little is known about how environmental and host-infecting populations are related. Here, phylogenetic clustering and diversity were investigated in a natural community of rhizobial bacteria from the genus Bradyrhizobium. These bacteria live in the soil and also form beneficial root nodule symbioses with legumes, including those ...
