Alfvén Number for the Richtmyer–Meshkov Instability in Magnetized Plasmas

چکیده

Magnetohydrodynamical evolution of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) is investigated by two-dimensional MHD simulations. The RMI suppressed a strong magnetic field, whereas amplifies an ambient field many orders magnitude if seed weak. We have found that suppression and amplification processes can be evaluated continuously along with amplitude Alfv\'en number $R_A$, which defined as ratio linear growth velocity to speed at interface. When less than unity, Lorentz force acting on fluid mitigates unstable motion significantly, interface oscillates stably in this limit. If $R_A \gtrsim 1$, other hand, surface modulation increases due RMI. maximum strength enhanced up factor $R_A$. This critical feature universal independent initial Mach incident shock, Atwood number, corrugation amplitude, even direction field.

A Powerful Viscous Shear Instability in Weakly Magnetized, Dilute Plasmas

When the ion mean free path much exceeds the Larmor radius in a plasma, the viscous stress tensor is altered dramatically, and depends only upon quantities measured along the field lines. This regime corresponds to typical interstellar medium conditions in galaxies and protogalaxies, even if the magnetic field is extremely weak with negligible pressure and tension forces. Despite the fact that ...

Dust in Magnetized Plasmas

Overview of recent progress in studies of magnetized dusty plasmas is presented. Dust dynamic under the influence of an applied magnetic field in various types of discharges and conditions (including dust dynamic in the magnetized plasma sheath) is examined. The various dust driven mechanisms in magnetized plasma are considered and comparison experimental and theoretical data is performed. Infl...

Vortex interactions in magnetized plasmas

Current-vortex filament solutions to the twofluid plasma equations that describe drift-Alfvén waves are presented. Such filament systems are Hamiltonian. Integrable three and four filament systems are discussed in some detail. A wide variety of orbit topologies exists in the plasma case. Special attention is paid to collapses where all filaments contract to a single point. The differences and e...

Alfvén instability in a compressible flow.

A new ideal magnetohydrodynamic instability is presented. It is shown that linear incompressible Alfvénic disturbances can get over-reflected and exponentially amplified in compressible plasma flows. A simple and transparent stability criterion for a two-layer model is derived. The instability does not require a shear in the flow and may arise for rather moderate sub-Alfvénic flow speeds. It is...
