Aligning Calculus with Life Sciences Disciplines: The Argument for Integrating Statistical Reasoning

Governmental and educational organizations have pointed out that students coming into the biological sciences require stronger skills in statistics data modeling are not usually addressed typical engineering-based calculus courses. Our work here documents how faculty biology mathematics this issue at a large urban university southwestern USA. The Calculus for Life Sciences course was redesigned to integrate analysis engage activities connecting foundational practical aspects of statistics-based professionals life sciences. goal obtain better-prepared cohort with positive perception use their careers. Over four semesters, doubled average enrollment students, failure rate reduced by more than 50%, reported attitudinal responses regarding application math studies. mastery throughout semester, however, did correlate demonstrated on graded activities. This article provides case study successes pitfalls we encountered as attempted shift all course, including pedagogy, grading, curriculum.
