Alignment shift as functional markedness reversal

چکیده

Abstract In this paper, we propose treating alignment shift as a process of functional markedness reversal in the domain semantically transitive constructions. We illustrate how approach allows us to capture similarities between shifts Eskimo-Aleut and Western Austronesian languages, despite morphosyntactic differences their voice systems. Using three diagnostics (semantic transitivity, topic continuity P, discourse frequency), compare antipassive ergative constructions varieties actor ( av ) undergoer uv varieties. argue that is equivalent functionally unmarked P-prominent construction (e.g., ergative, ), whilst accusative A-prominent antipassive, ). On basis, claim both language groups are undergoing parallel from accusative, since marked more conservative varieties, but lose character begin function innovative

Thematic roles, markedness alignment and processing complexity.

Two experiments used eye-tracking during reading to investigate the role of the consistency of the relative markedness alignment of noun phrases (NPs) in the processing of complex sentences in Korean. To do so, the animacy of the first NP was varied in both experiments to manipulate the relative markedness of NPs. In addition, case markings of the second NP (nominative vs. accusative) were mani...

Esimbi Vowel Height Shift: Implications for Faith and Markedness*

In this paper I discuss the theoretical implications of a vowel height transfer in Esimbi for three current issues in the analysis of featural phenomena in Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993). Esimbi exhibits a remarkable surface distribution of vowels: a greater number of vowel height contrasts occur in prefixes than in roots. On the face of it, this appears to belie the generalizati...

Direct OT: Representation as Pure Markedness

This paper argues for a model of morphology and phonology in which phonological form is represented purely in terms of markedness rather than by strings of segments. The argument runs as follows: (i) underlying representations are prosodified; (ii) this makes them relatively ill-formed; (iii) so representations can be represented purely in terms of ill-formedness. Step (i) brings to its logical...

Logic & Markedness

The purpose of this essay is to establish the validity of the following four propositions. 1. The assumption that symbolic logic is valid a priori is false, as are the corollaries implicit in this assumption, namely, that symbolic logic is the one and only logic; that it is the logic of effective practical reasoning and action; and, that it is the logic that governs natural language. 2. Typolog...

Comparative Markedness

The markedness constraints of classic Optimality Theory assign violation-marks to output candidates without reference to the input or to other candidates. This article explores an alternative conception of markedness: markedness constraints compare the candidate under evaluation with another candidate, the most faithful one. Comparative constraints distinguish two situations: the candidate unde...
