All immigrants are not alike: Intersectionality matters in views of immigrant groups

چکیده
In two studies, we investigated how intersecting social categories shape views of immigrants in the United States. In Study 1, analyzed 310 attributes generated by 92 participants for category immigrant and 30 additional groups with (e.g. “undocumented immigrant”) reflecting various levels status. Using Meaning Extraction Method (MEM) factor analysis to examine shared meanings, identified five factors; further comparative analyses focused on first factors (Vulnerable vs. Hardworking, Drain Asset). The importance legal status judgments these was evident comparisons generic four specific intersections. An examination all 31 showed that higher were perceived as Hardworking (less Vulnerable) high national Assets (low Drain), while lower varied Vulnerability perceptions but generally thought be Drains nation rather than Assets. 2, 270 evaluated intersectional differed combinations (privileged) (marginalized) group memberships, using scales based terms 1. Participants rated privileged statuses less vulnerable more likely an asset marginalized or mixed statuses. utility a bottom-up approach assess stereotype content is discussed.

Not all M&As are alike--and that matters.
Despite all that's been written about mergers and acquisitions, even the experts know surprisingly little about them. The author recently headed up a year-long study sponsored by Harvard Business School on the subject of M&A activity. In-depth findings will emerge over the next few years, but the research has already revealed some interesting results. Most intriguing is the notion that, althoug...
متن کاملNot all laboratories are alike.
KLUG et al. [1] have reported observer variability within and between two experienced observers of a number of lung function measurements in preschool children. One of the methods assessed was the measurement of airway resistance by the interrupter technique (Rint). In their laboratory, Rint measurements have high interobserver variability, although no systematic bias. In our laboratory interob...
متن کاملNot All Contextual Parameters Are Alike∗
A great deal of discussion in recent philosophy of language has centered on the idea that there might be hidden contextual parameters in our sentences. But relatively little attention has been paid to what those parameters themselves are like, beyond the assumption that they behave more or less like variables do in logic. My goal in this paper is to show this has been a mistake. I shall argue t...
متن کاملAre all antidepressants alike?
Antidepressants are indicated in about 40 different disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and other disorders. We propose to call these disorders antidepressani-responsive disorders (ARDs). We describe the clinical and biological criteria that differentiate the antidepressants. Although antidepressants share the same clinical efficacy in most ARDs, the configuration of adverse...
متن کاملGossiping Girls Are All Alike
This paper discusses several different ways to model the wellknown gossiping girls problem in promela. The highly symmetric nature of the problem is exploited using plain promela, topspin (an extension to Spin for symmetry reduction), and by connecting Spin to bliss (a tool to compute canonical representations of graphs). The model checker Spin is used to compare the consequences of the various...
