An update on dissolved methane distribution in the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean

چکیده

Abstract. Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas and plays significant role in recent increasing global temperatures. The oceans are natural source of methane contributing to atmospheric concentrations, yet our understanding the oceanic cycle poorly constrained. Accumulating evidence indicates that part CH4 produced oxygenated surface waters as by-product phytoplanktonic activity. This study focused on subtropical North Atlantic Ocean (26? N, 80? W 26? 18? W) where distribution dissolved concentrations associated air–sea fluxes during winter 2020 were investigated. Water samples from 64 stations collected upper water column up depths 400 m. oxic mixed layer was oversaturated with ranging 3–7 nmol L?1, highest 7–10 L?1 found east transect, consistent other regions world's oceans. high anomalies be phosphate-depleted abundance ubiquitous picocyanobacteria Synechococcus Prochlorococcus elevated. Although phyla cannot excluded, this suggests cyanobacteria contribute release region. calculation further confirmed CH4. provides corroborate key play helping explain oversaturation open ocean, otherwise known “ocean paradox”.

Dissolved iron in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean

[1] Detailed depth profiles and surface transects of dissolved iron (DFe defined by 0.4-mm filtration) were investigated on three cruises in the subtropical and tropical Atlantic Ocean where dust deposition varied by 3 orders of magnitude. Surface DFe and dissolved Mn concentrations reflected dust deposition trends, but are not proportional to the estimated inputs. Using estimates of the atmosp...

The Distribution of Dissolved Iron in the West Atlantic Ocean

Iron (Fe) is an essential trace element for marine life. Extremely low Fe concentrations limit primary production and nitrogen fixation in large parts of the oceans and consequently influence ocean ecosystem functioning. The importance of Fe for ocean ecosystems makes Fe one of the core chemical trace elements in the international GEOTRACES program. Despite the recognized importance of Fe, our ...

Decadal Variabilities of the Upper Layers of the Subtropical North Atlantic: An Ocean Model Study

Numerical simulations of the Atlantic Ocean during the period 1950 to 1989, using a sigma coordinate, free surface numerical model, show long-term variabilities in the upper ocean subtropical gyre similar to those obtained from observations. The simulations show how westward propagating planetary waves, originated in the eastern North Atlantic, affect interdecadal variabilities of ocean propert...

Continental Runoff and Effects on the North Atlantic Ocean Subtropical Mode Water

Interannual salinity variations in North Atlantic Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) are well known although the cause is less well understood. Attempts to model local salinity variation with local evaporation and precipitation have not been successful and some authors invoke advection of low salinity water as the cause. Examination of the STMW and North American river runoff data suggests that runo...

Observations of the Boundary Current System at 26.58N in the Subtropical North Atlantic Ocean*

Five current meter moorings and four horizontal electric field records spanning June 1990–February 1992 are used to describe the mean structure and variability of the vertically averaged velocity field and volume transport extending 425 km east of Abaco, The Bahamas, at 26.58N. Examination of zonal and meridional velocity sections shows that, while meandering may explain part of the variability...
