Transient Fluid-Flow Phenomena in the Continuous Steel-Slab Casting Mold and Defect Formation
Phenomena associated with the turbulent flow of molten steel in a continuous casting mold are responsible for many defects in the final product, including surface slivers, frozen meniscus hooks, captured inclusions that enter the mold from upstream, and mold slag entrapment. Animations of some of these transient flow phenomena are presented from Large-Eddy Simulations of a typical slab caster w...
متن کاملContinuous slab caster scheduling and interval graphs
We define and solve a scheduling problem for operating the continuous steel slab caster which converts molten steel into slabs. The nature of our problem has an interesting connection to a special class of graphs known as interval graphs. We show that our problem can be seen as a variant of the clique partitioning problem defined on interval graphs and develop an optimal algorithm for it.
متن کاملDevelopment of a Model for Transient Simulation and Control of a Continuous Steel Slab Caster
A two-dimensional heat transfer model for transient simulation and control of a continuous steel slab caster is described. Slab thermal and solidification conditions are computed by the model as a function of time-varying casting speed, secondary spray cooling water flow rates and temperature, slab thickness, steel chemistry, and pouring and ambient temperatures. A solidification model that inc...
متن کاملFormulation of Mold Level Control Model by Molten Steel Flow Analysis Method
This paper describes activities relating to mold level control in continuous casting process as case examples of our process control solution business, in which we clarify and evaluate the process phenomena and design the control system. Initially, a mold level control model has been formulated by fluid flow analysis technique that evaluates molten steel flow in the mold quantitatively. The mod...
متن کاملEffects of a Magnetic Field on Turbulent Flow in the Mold Region of a Steel Caster
Electromagnetic braking (EMBr) greatly influences turbulent flow in the continuous casting mold and its transient stability, which affects level fluctuations and inclusion entrainment. Large eddy simulations are performed to investigate these transient flow phenomena using an accurate numerical scheme implemented on a graphics processing unit. The important effect of the current flow through th...
