Animal Welfare Issues Associated with Rearing Dairy Calves in Nepalese Context

Abstract In Nepal, a predominantly Hindu country, most communities consider the cow as sacred animal leading to their special place in society. However, male calves are neglected because of limited utility context religiously restricted beef consumption. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among dairy farmers Chitwan district central region Nepal understand rearing practices and associated welfare concerns. majority producers (70%) that participated reared female be replacement animals, hence providing better care management on farm. Male calves, however, were vulnerable indiscriminate removal following non-humane methods; 20% starved by feed withdrawal, chased away from farm live stray animals. Therefore, religious, sentimental, economic, ethical analysis situation needs assessed broader sustainable policy implemented change overall attitude towards calves.
